dog getting hot?
i have a dog that seems to get over heated in the summer.when he gets treed he will locate & tree for a little bit then he will shut down &only bark every couple minutes.last year i fed enhanced dog food.i also ran him on the tread mill 3 times a week for 30 min & hunted him 5 to 6 nights a week.i also gave him a fish oil pill every day.this year im feeding native level 4 & plan to hunt him only 2 or 3 days a week.anny suggestions would be greatly appreaciated.its hard to win in the summer with a dog that dont bark every 2 minutes on the tree.

try an electrolyte replacer when hunting mixes in with there water, important to keep them properly hydrated when hunting hard even in winter.

Put the dog on k9 super fuel,I have a male that will get hot in the summer,he's an extremely hard tree dog,he won't quit but I worry and try to keep up on him but before super fuel after20 min of treeing he looked wore out and would stand in a creek and drink seems like five gallon a of water at a time.started him on super fuel and he can tree45 min plus and when you take him off he is still pulling and take him to water and he mite lap up a couple mouthfuls and he pulling to go again.bottom line with super fuel you will see a huge difference.between that and the native your feeding he should be a lot cooler.just try to stay with your dogs better in the heat cause if they overheat one time good if they live through there never the same .you can also keep some alcohol wipes in your pocket and int. Wipe down his,her inner ears as that also helps dissipate heat.sometimes you just have to weigh out if it's worth it to hunt them at all.jmo when it gets real hot and humid I try to wait until after midnite to cut loose
check the protein in your dog food if too much this will burn a hound up in the heat also get him checked for heart worm this is sign's of them

I feel it does not matter good or bad hi proteins are not to be over done in the summer months. Yes, I prefer a good meat based formula over a grain based formula.

The only thing we can do as owners is to minimize their recovery and beat the competition that way. Let them stay gassed, get yours back to hunting hard. "Properly hydrated" does not mean all the water he can drink either. That is over hydrated and this too will not only make a dog run hot faster, but keep him hotter, longer. Just words of advice.

Don't
Blame the feed for everything. All dogs are different! Good protien/bad protien thats just silly! What regulates the intake of protien in any animal is how fast or slow it goes through them. The more time a body has to digest the food will be the deciding factor! Overheating on a certain dog food is a very common. The best thing you can do is go to your vet and have a thyroid test done. I would bet your dog has a slow tyroid! If this is the case you may have to feed something more to the dogs needs or just suppliments to your current feed. Hope this helps....

i dont know how bad ticks are in iowa. take him to your vet & have a test for erlicia (check spelling) i'v got 2 that have this. they will get hot & burn up when they get treed or excited.
some dogs you just have to keep on a low fat low protein diet & keep them thin in summer.
i forgot to mention that i took him to the vet last year & had a thorough exam done & they could find nothing.yhe vet said there was much more testing he could do but he thaught he tested for everything that would likely be the cause.at this time my dog was just a little under weight because i thaught this would help him run cooler.the vet told me to put weight back on him & feed good dog food.i believe with this dog the problem is genetic & also my fault. but would still like to know what i can do to make it less of a problem.thanks everyone for your input you have already saved me from taking a step in the wrong direction from what i read on here about the red cell.

Likes done been said protein is not the problem I feed 35/25 year round and still will supplement that
dog
I had a friend had a dog that started doing that and after. Testing from a vet it was found that he had an enlarged heart and arterys which caused him to barely tree at all .

I had that problem with my dog and I switched him to chicken and rice dog food and it really made a big difference. It's a different kind of protien than what's in regular dog food and they don't seem to get as hot on it. I think all the corn and stuff in regular dog food causes them to run hotter.
