Any Toyota experts?
87 pickup 22r engine has begun to sometimes only click when I turn the ignition. New battery and usually after a few clicks it will turn over with plenty of power. Solenoid? Starter? Are they together on this model or do they have to be replaced together. I should probably stop pressing my luck and figure it out! I don't want a replay of my wife picking me and a couple of dogs in her van from several years ago. She hasn't let me live that one down yet.
the wire to your starter has a plug not making good contact.it plugs in the back of starter.

try tightening down the wires on the solenoid and if that dont help then put a starter on it that waht it sounds like to me

The contacts in the starter are gone happened to me replace the starter or have it rebuilt its two little contacts that strike the armature when electricity is applied it'll drive you nuts trying to find the problem Toyota sells the contacts but its just as cheap to replace it I am a mechanic and it took a old school Tech to finally figure out my problem cause It was intermittent and therefore hard to track down
Trust me go get a starter from the parts house the contacts will be upgraded in it and you'll be trouble free

Thanks you guys. Where is the solenoid located? I will have a look at the contacts for it and the starter if they look bad, I'll just replace it.
its on the starter

It is on the starter but be careful taking it apart there are springs and a ball bearing that need to be put back in correctly I replaced my contacts but the wearing contacts had done ruined the starter I got one for $50 bucks at the parts house

One last thing. Do new or remanufactured starters usually come with a new solenoid or will I have to buy one separate?
Thanks Again
THE PLUG IN WIRE ON STARTER
THATS WHAT I HAD THE TROUBLE WITH. PULL OFF AND PLUG BACK IN. IF IT STARTS, TAKE A PLIERS AND CRIMP THE PLUG A BIT SO TO TIGHTEN WHEN YOU SLIP BACK ON THE CONNECTION. FIXED MINE. <v>

ALL YOU YOTA OWNERS THAT HAVE THE V-6, DOES YOUR GAS MILEAGE SUCK AS BAD AS MINE? I COULD BE DRIVING A FULL SIZE FOR THE GAS THIS THING IS BURNING. I HEARD TELL OF SOMETHING THAT WEARS OUT IN THE FUEL INJECTION THAT ALLOWS FULL FLOW OF GAS INSTEAD OF PULSING LIKE IT SHOULD. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. <v>

I had that problem with the starter and it turned out to be the contacts. I got the contacts from Toyota and replaced them myself. I think the cost was $9.00.
Perry, I get 20 MPG on my V6. That's all I could get out of it. I keep the air filter clean and that's the only thing that keeps it from getting worse. I think the V6 RPM's are too high and that is where the loss of gas mileage is going, in my opinion.
Sea Foam is good stuff, but has no lubricants for the soft parts and I wouldn't use over 4 oz to a tank. Lucas fuel treatment is not as harsh.
MPG
I have an "08 Tundra with the 5.7........16.5mpg in and out of farms all day and 18ish if I get out and go on the big road...............funny deal ....381 hp will push a camaro right down the road and darn near same mpg as the 4 and 6 bangers...??

Norm it's a 1995 extended cab with the 3.0 V6 with 286,000 miles. I was getting 15-17 mpg when I bought the truck with 90,000 miles. I changed the oil, plugs, and air filter and got it up to 20 mpg. I try to drive between 50-55 mph and keep the the rpm's around 2500. If I run over 60 mph I am losing mpg. I only hunt out of the truck.

Had a couple of the 22r engines('89 and '91). My '06 with a 4.0 6cylinder is getting almost as good gas mileage....18/19 stop and go and 20/21 on the road. Get 18 pulling a 5x8 trailer full of wood.

This truck I originally asked about has 450,000 miles on it. It still cleans up pretty nice when I want it to but does have some rust spots on it. It is on its second engine. The gas mileage isn't very good though. I have 31's on it..
