Can't "Plainly See" Anything
So several of us without better sense, went on a competition hunt in the pouring rain, last night. And there were a couple trees we struggled with scoring. we couldn't find a coon, or off game, nor could we find a hole. In fact we struggled to see anything, with the hard rain pelting us in the face.
I'm sure this isn't that uncommon, as I know a lot of hunts take place in the rain. So what are some of the opinions on scoring trees in a down pour? If you find a coon, well that's easy, but if you struggle to see anything, do you circle it or take a more conservative approach???
If it is raining so hard that you cant even shine the tree I would say circle it up. Call time out move to a different spot and hope the rain at least let up some.
I spectated a cast last night in the rain as well, and the easiest way to shine a tree is to back up as far as possible so you're not looking straight up into the tree, rather try to look at it from the side as much as possible.

the handlers job to find a coon a den or place
you just cant shine
Rule 5:Circled And Deleted Points.(a) "......where there could be a coon , yet Judge does not see a coon and no off game is seen."
So if you can't see the tree for all the rain, then there could be a coon there right? If no off game is seen, I'd circle it.
This is different from, say, a situation where you have a tree with no leaves, no vines, no nest, no rain and no coon but....."I betcha anything there is a hole up there in that big crotch, we just can't see it" I've seen those get circled too and I feel those should always be minused,.

If you choose to hunt in the incliment conditions why should the rules change?? You still have ten minutes to find the coon.No coon no points! I have seen dogs swimming and treeing around the bottom of a tree before from rapid rain and runoff. And I have seen more coons in the rain looking down with the leaves on than when it's dry and leaves on.The Lighting must hurt their eyes!
