The Patch Dog or The Deep Hunter

Or the Hound that trees the actual coon track he or she started. There is a differents. Whats your take on this thread. Personally I want a Patch dog, with lots of smarts. I have always thought the dog that trees the coon he or she starts is the most accurate, consistentlly. I learned this from a one year old Female, she was off Williams Chopper son of 1970 World Champion Gann's Finisher. She would tree a coon and I would shoot it out to her, after the coon was on the ground, she would take off back from the direction the coon she had just treed came from. Then either become treed or take another track she crossed and tree it and have a coon or den tree. Most always the first tree she made had a coon. This really got me thinking what was happening,she done this often that kill season.

If a dog strikes a coon fifty yards in the woods stick with that track an tree it but if their is no track close then get deep an find one. But I dont wanna be able to turn a dog loose behind a dog that has gotten deep an tree coons close that the dog deep past up

I want my dog to strike and tree the FIRST track he comes across. I don't want to see him again until I pull him off a tree. If it takes 50 yards or 2 miles I want him hooked with a coon.

I HATE this mentality. Absolutely HATE it. What are the chances that you have permission on that piece that your dog went 2 miles to tree a coon? It's hard enough to get permission as it is, nevermind when we have idiot dogs running to the next county and treeing next to somebody's house.

If I had a dog like that, he'd have a big frickin hole in his head.

I've lived and hunted in Ohio, Kentucky, Minnesota, and Nebraska. And I've heard the same song in every state. And in every state there were guys who got in trouble for dogs going too far and it was just as difficult to get good permission.

These types of dogs make landowners mad and we lose respect in the community for it.

No permission

I have had my butt chewed out more than once for going after my dogs. They didn't hunt that deep, It's was usually in late january when casing an bore coon. But I also have had land owners to give a ride back to where I turn lose. I all ways talk back to them nice no matter what since i am in the worng with no permission. Some have gave me permission and told me of other
land they own and told me to hunt there.

I don't want a dog that leaves the country and ends up 5 miles down the road and while your walking to it, see 3 or 4 coon sitting in trees that they blew by on their way to tree the one you hope they have, in the next county. We don't own tracking collars, all our dogs hunt medium and check in about every 20 minutes, unless they run across a track. After checking in, they go another direction and hunt that area. This is what i like and what I breed for, simple and easy.

I expect my dogs to tree every coon in the woods! I expect every coon to go up a tree. I expect my dog to hunt close in small woods but get deep in in the big woods! I also expect my dog to come every time i call, and never even think of running anything but a coon!!! I "expect" perfection!!
I know a lot of people here have those kinda dogs and one day maybe i could somehow acquire one for myself!!!
I guess i am just stuck with my unpredictable dogs that could possibly do anything at anytime. But, what fun would it be if my dogs always did what was expected of them!

As I have gotten older I have learned that I would rather tree three coon in the first 30 minutes then I would walk 30 minutes to the fiest tree. Give me the patch woods dog that trees all of the coon in the patch instead ole Mile or More that you have to wait at the truck until he trees to see if you need to drive to get closer.

you old people in ok. must be like some of us old people in ohio,,lol

i want my dogs to tree everything in the woods i turn them loose in and if nothing moveing to check in and then go back out deeper if need be,,
i dont want a dog that when turned loose will run a mile or so before it starts hunting,

if i wanted it to tree the coons 1-2 miles down the road ,i'd turn it loose down there!!!

well mr DREW where i hunt i do have land that stretches 2 miles or to be exact 4.67 miles. so go ahead and hate it. bring'em on down here and we will see how these "idiot" dogs match up

I like both and I've owned and won with both. I've got one now that will tree coons around other hounds and on the way to the deeeep hunter......

But long story short the deep hunter is what I like. You can take them anywere accross the country and they do he same . Through the country with a coon can and does win anywhere.

Last 2 world champs are deeep and lonely style dogs

People have to understand before they go to baggin on others that different areas require different style dogs. Some areas patch dogs are going to shine and other places the go yonder dogs will.

This is the right way the smart man would one patch hunting dog and ready to go deep if he were to go where large woods are.

I can live with that. Also enter few hunts so winning don't enter in.

Age has changed some of my likes and dislikes. These days I don't LIKE walking deep and will drive around every time if it's possible.
Sooner or later in most places these days going deep means dead in the road or shot.
Hunting deep every time isn't for me. I turn loose where I expect a coon to be , don't always work out so we load up and try some where else.
Finishing a track 2 miles away is a entirely different thing than going 2 miles to find one. I can't remember the last time if ever the dogs actually ran a track 2 miles although it may have seemed like it at the time.
I've gotten rid of a couple that went deep too often and found they were running down 2 tracks or roads or motorcyle trails.

when i was a young man i didnt care how deep they got i could run to them but as i got older i liked those 20-30 min dogs that had a nuff sense to check back in last 2 i had went way to long for me most times 30-40 mins just sat down where you cut them loose if not back in that time get up high start listening for them you would evently find the treed some where my health got me with parkisons diease just couldnt go very far so got rid of them but every body has differnt opions on what they want in a dog

In a lot of areas down here you would go a lot of nights without getting struck if youre dog won't go as far as it takes. I don't want a dog that blows out of the country passing up tracks, but he dang sure better be willing to go as far as it takes. I like a dog that starts hunting when unsnapped and hunts at a steady medium pace in one general direction (the direction i point him).

Or have an imprint of a toyota symbol on it's side when it gets whacked crossing roads. I dont like that kinda dog either. It limits where you can hunt, and even when you can hunt. For me, I enjoy walking out with the dogs...hearing the strike, the trail, and the change over to tree. My idea of fun isn't going back to the truck and driving around until you track them down and walk into a barking dog on a tree. I miss all the good part when that happens. I've actually never had one, but if I had a dog that would go out 200 or 300 yards max from me and never be gone more than 20 minutes I'd actually hunt more. I cant take the chance of being out all night on a work night. That's just what I like...not saying it's right or wrong ...but I sure would ike to find one like that. Actually, I may have found it...we'll see lol.
