ukc rules ?????
I'm a young guy just getting into field trials I've been to 2 hunts and have got 2 different answers would like to know the right way so if your not sure your right please don't post lol! Here it is: after first 3 mins or more a dog opens up but its not using its normal bark( yeping squeaking whimper ect.) Do you have to strike it then or can you wait tell it barks out right? I've been told you don't have to strike them tell they bark out right and I've been told you have to strike em when they open. I know you have to on 3rd bark but need to clear what they are calling a bark. I thank if they open 3 times you should have to strike them but I'm told by guys that hunted a lot of hunts you don't and others say you do. Thanks for the help!
Jeremy, this rule needs to be clarified by UKC. I have a female that squeaks before she trullay opens. I will tell the judge this, and will not strike her until she ususes her correct mouth. This may mean that I will never get a first strike, but a squeak to me is not her true mouth when running. Hope Jed will clarify this.
?
When I judge A cast .Before turning loose. I ask if any one`s dog has a habit that needs addressed before casting dogs. If at this time no one speaks up i will insist that dog that makes three sounds loud enough to be called . That handler do just that or be scratched for not calling thier dog. If some one speaks up with the statement that my dog makes sounds while hunting then I will explain that as the judge if i hear a sound from a dog that is loud enough for other dogs to hear i will consider this a bark and expect handler to call his dog . To me a bad habit can interfear with other dogs while hunting. This and the hole rule or abused in my opinion more then all the other rules put together.

My question would be would they strike the dog on the same squeak if the other dogs struck or would they wait for the dog to open in its regular running voice. I know of a couple of guys that change this rule according to what is going to benifit them. I would like to know the true rule on this myself.
I always tell guys that if you strike on a squeak right off then you better do it the whole 2 hours. If a dog has a squeak but the handler says they have a true bark then that is what they strike on and that is what recoveries will be based on from that point on. I have seen dogs that will squeak 7 or 8 times before they bark and like Roy said, it's best to try and clarify this before the dogs are turned loose.

I agree with Halfway. Must be consistent. Would like to add that I won't award a recovery on a whimper if the handler doesn't strike on a whimper.
I told them before the hunt but they said it don't matter. If it opens at all 3 times in anyway you have to strike they said. But I've had just as many tell me one way as the other. Would like to know how it is to be done before the next hunt its cost me two cast.
Nowhere in the rules does it say squeak, squeal, or other then normal bark doesn't count. It states, to be struck on or before the third bark. So I quess they may be right. I also ask the cast about their dogs habits before the start and hold each handler accountable for what they say.
3rd bark
Get a dictionary and find the definition for bark. That's the rule, on or before the 3rd BARK,whatever Webster's dictionary states that's the way it SHOULD be.

If you can't hunt over them, those Championship titles don't mean Didly Squatt.
What's it say?
1.The harsh sound uttered by a dog.
the abrupt, harsh, explosive cry of a dog
3 barks
jeremy the key is if you strike on ur gyps squeel 1 time u must continue whole hunt if you want to wait till she uses her real mouth u cant be rewarded checks on her squeel live by squeel die by squeel lol
I understand that I'm just wanting to clear up how the rule should be I'm new to the beagle hunts seems a lot of people I've talk to are not sure on it to. When one cast dose it one way and one another it needs to be cleared up.
At the last hunt a guy that everyone says knows the rules real good told me it don't matter if they open in anyway 3 times they have to be struck.
