Snow Nose

Went running today, or better tried. The temp was -3 to 11 degrees, about 12" to 14" of snow, wind was anywhere from 10 to 20 mph. We jumped a few hare but the dogs could not run for beans. We circled one hare and then the dogs acted as if the hare flew away. I watched a sight chase for about 100yds and when the hare got in the pines dogs couldnt run.The area was covered with tracks which made the dogs work alittle bit but still couldnt run.
So my question is, Who has a stud out there that can really run on snow? not bark all over but actually run.The dogs we ran today are between 1yr and 2yrs old and by no means snow dogs. I believe it takes a good 4 to 5 years to make a snow hound but I'm looking at my future dogs.

Hey Darren, I dropped a few this morning at -7 degrees. The runs were back and forth from good and long to choppy and short. I notice on days like this, the younger dogs run very tightmouthed as the older hounds carry the line. Ive noticed that scenting seems different from yard to yard at times. Not sure if the wind, or sun hits those areas differently, but I know certain areas just wont hold scent. A dog cant run what a dog cant smell, and Im sure that there are areas and conditions out there that the best hound in the world couldnt open on.
My young dog Prop, just turned two in Dec. He has struggled with the deep freeze, but at the same age I watched his father, grandfather great grand and great-great grandfather do the same, only to turn into great snow hounds with a few seasons under them.

Young dogs just need age and experience. At least they are not babbling on what they cant produce. Ive seen alot of very big nose hounds look very mouthy during better days, outweighing the one or two days a year that they were the only ones running. Snownose stud dogs means very little unless your putting them to a snownose female. I managed to take two today before I whimped out and headed for the woodstove! Its not easy on hound or hunter on days like today. Goodluck

p.s Its right now -11 going down to -18 before morning... I will be sleeping in on Monday! lol

Hey Rick I hear ya, it was -14 this morning and I dont care if I have a dog that can run in that temperature because I'm not standing out there to watch.
I have a 9yr old female that can run on anything you put her on.So with the young dogs struggling I figure it's a good time to watch some of these high powered studs run.You know as well as I that living in N.Y if your dog can't run on snow you got no dog.There for, I'm also looking ahead and wanna watch some studs run when the going is tough.I believe just because a dog has won a trial on snow doesnt make him a snow hound.Just looking to watch some snow dogs go.

Might wanna check out Butkus that the Sundown boys have. He's got a heck of a nose on him and can without a doubt run on snow.

Don't let Rick fool you. I"ve seen his Max and Blacky hounds go and I would put them up against the best on snow in a heartbeat. Heard a lot about Butkis and would like to see him go too myself.

Hey Rick would love to get together sometime and just run. Thanks for the compliments on Butkus he has been alot of fun. Joe told us if we liked him in the fall we would love him on snow and he was right. Great hound to which we are proud to own. It seems the worse the conditions get the better he likes it. Not sure his handlers are the same way though. LOL!

IFC Dirty Pond Legacy's Blacky can run in about anything. Andy would have no issues showing him alone or with any other hounds. He's run in a snow hound challenge and won so I'm sure others have seen him on snow.

FC Kemlers After Burner has a very good nose and excellent check work.

FC South Hill Baxter has a huge nose also and can get it done.

I'm sure there's some more. I prefer to see them first hand as nothing is more impressive then a dog running when an entire pack is shut out.

My cousin just bought a dog out of Blacky ( THREE JAYS JACK FANCY). She can really run on snow real clean also, no extra mouth, we like her so much we breed a double bred Heli- Prop bitch to Blacky.
I've seen Baxter run, nice dog. I run with Rich Diecher (breeder of Baxter) alot, Rich has some of the best snow dogs I've ever seen run. Baxter is getting up there in age, how did Andy make out breeding to him?

Darrin, you are in the mecca of snow hounds! Joe P, Andy P, Vic C, John O, Dick D, I could go on and on, and all within a few hrs from you. You hit it on the head...when and if a person has the time, go see the good ones run and more importantly watch their off spring, its a blessing!
On my side of the state, many a hound has been humbled by the brutal winter we are having this year.. It aint been much fun for young hounds and the cream has risen to the top!
Like sundown said, the dogs may be doing better than the handler in some cases!! Although I have alot of respect for a bad condition hound, Id rather never have to see or own one!!! lol. That would mean Im living in a much better place than Buffalo NY!

Dave, I told you and Don, at the worlds, you were gonna be happy owning Butkis when the snow came! Im glad I predicted it correct.. Its great to hear your having fun and enjoying him and his great bloodline! I look forward to someday soon dropping some dogs together!

Oh, by the way, if you tell any of the above mentioned guys that you are my friend.... never mind, they will charge you double!!

Anytime your feeling those Buffalo Blues hop in the beagle bus and come on over. We got around 14" of snow on the hill and running has been great until this cold weather blew in.The weather for tomorrow calls for 30 degrees and 3" of snow. This weekend is looking good.

I must be the only one on here thinking the terms "snownose" and "snowhound" are thrown around awful loosely...........

-4 the other morning 8 inches of snow Nitro and Reba ... no problem gearing down (which surprised me) and circling COTTONTAILS, wasnt a screamin race but ran em plenty good to kill if u were hunting , big diff runnin hare on snow and cottontails on snow fellas.

Then ran young dogs with Pup trainer, they did ok ,i jsut dont feel young dogs noses are developed enough to run in those conditions day in and day out, long term it doesnt seem to have a bearing on there ability as NorWester said.

dont get confused tho ive heard these guys brag on big noses to find the dog is a mouthy idiot that lacks brains. EXTRA MOUTH DOESNT ALWAYS MEAN MORE NOSE sometimes it means less brains.

absolutely not, My idea of a good snow hound verys from alot of peoples.I know what I want in a dog and I know what I dont have and what I'm looking for.Not wanting to insult anybodys feelings I keep my mouth shut and go watch dogs run.
A few years back I contacted some of the stud dogs in better beagle mag. and went and watched some of them run ( the ones that would show them)on snow. Thus my reply, "just because a dog wins a trial in the snow dosent make it a snow hound".
I'm just leaving it out there that if anybody has seen or heard of a good snow hound I'd like to see it run.I'm just looking to better my kennel.

Snow nose: Show me a dog that can run on 1 1/2' of melted and then refrozen snow(so hard that you can't track yourself when you walk on it)...or a dog that can take a "cold track" where the rabbit has stirred the night before and run it like it is hot...that is a dog with a snow nose!

I have been fortunate enough to see a couple of these and they will impress you when the going is tuff!

It was single digits here in Ohio this week and I had Jeep out several times. The colder it is, the better he runs. It did take a few runs before he really got up going, but once he locked on the race was on. I love big nose dogs because of years of rabbit hunting with dogs that you should just leave in the truck once it drops below 32. When i strated looking for a solid male to replace my turbo male my mission was to find a hare bound that could run in cold temps. Rabbit season in OHIo in Jan and Feb are always cold and I love having nose power now! Good luck in finding a good male.

I'll tell ya........ it aint necessarily a snowhound just because it can run a rabbit when there is snow on the ground.
If that is the case I suppose everyone has them now as last week on the news they said there was snow cover in 48 states.

No offence Djvgny but statements like this have got to raise an eyebrow......

If you aint out hunting in the tough stuff how do you know she can do it?

I keep my nose to the ground ANY TIME talk of snowhounds and snownose topics come up as I'm always looking for hounds or bloodlines that can do the job.
However, in my opinion if you can't or won't hunt in the worst winter has to offer then you're just pissing into the wind.
That's when you'll find out where the dog power is and who has the snowhounds and snow nose.

Again, no offence and I respect the fact your brave enough to start asking the questions on a forum about who has the studs.
It shouldn't be hard to find one though......

No Offence taken, you see when I was young and dumb (ABOUT 6YRS AGO) I'D run in those sub zero tempatures thus the deformed nipples on my 9yr old dog from frost bite.She was my measureing stick for stud hunting. If they could run with her or better they could might be worthy of breeding.
And now today as I am older and wiser I find it very hard to enjoy myself out there is sub zero tempatures with snot freezing to my face so I dont care if my dog can run in -14 degrees but you can bet your butt he/she better run in 0 degrees and 2 foot of snow or he/she aint eating my food.

if your refering to my comments on that other thread your darn right i got one buddy i offered to go with any one last weekend noone wanted to take me up on that offer! i was tying to help that guy out since i dont go to feild trials or breed mass number of pups does not mean i dont . Iknow what i got and have had over the years and what they can produce. further more i ran my dog all weekend long in these same temps and didnt have one problem what so ever sunday i ran the same hare for 3and a half hours and counted 11 circles going back and forthcross ways over the same covered line until i got to cold and picked him up thats right 1 dog dont need a pack to run one rabbit thats most of every ones problem. anyways i whent back on monday mornin and it was colder yet and run again 7 morecircles (i dont shoot many hare cause we dont have alot) but figured the dog deserved it so i shot it. This dog is 2and a half years old it just comes natural to him dont claim to have some great stud but ive had beagle 25yr and know that this one is special and wanted some others to benifit from it. im not going to promote any more on here because it dont do any good. another thing i dont do IS HUNT ON THIS COMPUTER. I DO MY HUNTIN IN THE WOODS.I DO KNOW THAT DARRIN PUTS HIS TIME IN TO HIS HOUNDS CAUSE IVE COUGHT HIM IN SOME MY SPOTS THIS WINTER. Darrin good luck on your search
