I'm carrying one of the pups to the woods each time just get them used to "the dark". Tonight the male pup found a turkey roost. He kept himself entertained for about 10 minutes witht he flying birds but I finally hit the tone button on his collar and he stopped/

First thing I would say is BACK OFF of him before you ruin him. You said he isn't tracking much yet. If he is to be worth a dam he has to learn to track to the tree before he tracks up the tree.
If you keep going like you are you will make a me two sob out of him.
When he is tracking better and he is still not treeing let him watch one run up the tree or squal one out and let him see it come down the tree. Any other time keep him back out at the edge of the umbrella of the tree. It forces there focuss on the tree and if one comes down there more abt to see it. Allso it keeps one from landing out away from the trunck of the tree while he is close to the trunk. That will loosen them up on the tree faster than anything I know.

I would find the best coon hunter in my area, you know the guy who always hunts a good hound, and give him those pups, before you screw them up. Tom

I agree with what these guys have said, you can't "make" a tree dog but a person can make mistakes to hold up progress. Not trying to sound like I know it all because I don't but give the dog woods exposure and dont push him. Alot of ppl wont agree with me on this but I dont really like the thought of using a shocking collar until the dog is going decent. When he is going decesnt then you can break him off of "off" game but if you shock him on everything thats not coon when he is real young he could just say heck with it and decide against using his nose at all. Also, the dog is only 6mo. old and just because a few ppl have had good hounds at nine mo. or a year old doesn't mean they all come around that fast. Like everyone on here has said "patience" is a must. Sounds to me like he is doing pretty darn good for only 6mo. Good luck and stick with him
Don't let him have a taste of the coon if he's not treeing before you get there, also hunt him by himself some

from what I have seen with my dogs, I wouldn't encourage him on tree. It makes them start jumping on the tree and bouncing around and acting silly. When they are ready they will start treeing plenty on their own. Seems like the ones that do more tracking than treeing at first tend to be a little more acurate once they put it all together. Good luck as it sounds like you have a nice pup and let him do it on his own.
pup
showing a pup a gaged coon on a almost dailey base is a bad thing to do i think show them a coon 1 or 2 times if thier intersted start doing things differnt like taking to woods you keep showing gaged coon all the time is not a good thing they get if they dont see it they wont tree on a tree in the woods and your are going to have a hot nosed dog they will pass up a older track trying to find a hot track if you in thin coon could be a lot of not treeing coon jmo
He has no need to track/tree all he knows/has been taught is listen for tree show up and fight coon.....I'd hunt him alone before he's ruined or me too"s so much he's worthless

I sure love a early starting dog i don't want one you got to keep and feed till they are two years old before they put it together but with that said 6mths old is to young to be hunting in my opinion and thats what it is opinion i want them to want to go 6mths and second take off the shocker

Why even let a pup out the pen if he cankt tag along? I can be fooled and suckered with Awea month old doing stuff thatcould only be expected of a4year old after he has learned to honor and back etc then if he gets independent when the occasion arises, he does it. Try to sell me pup like thatand you will most likely walk off empty handed with your dashed dreams for company.
hes 6 months old rome wasn't built over nite and you didn't learn to coonhunt in ten days either take your time thats why you have all these me to dogs people expect to much to young
HEYMAN!!!
Ok give no more coons but tie back , the reason no treat till he gets it right, LET HIM BE A KID !!!!!!! MEANTALY HE IS ABOUT 13 YEARS OLD LIKE A HUMAN AND NEEDS TO GROW UP . NEXT DONT TAKE HIM WITH A 17 MONTH OLD DOG THAT DOG SHOULD BE BY ITS SELF TO FINSH IT OUT IF NOT YOU WILL NEVER HAVE NOTHING .......IF YOU WANT MORE CALL ME I WILL TRY TO HELP....... THE BEST I CAN, BUT IF YOU DONT APLY THE THINGS YOU LEARN HERE THEN IT WONT DO ANY GOOD..........
