Wick's Idea on training pups

Do you all find Wick's thought that you should not hunt your pup till it is ten months to a year old to hold any water? I have a nice pup coming on 6 months and am itching to put him in the woods pretty heavy. Just looking for more input. Also...do you think i should start him by hisself or my 14 month old gyp who can tree coon but far from finished.

only think wick did was bottle commen sense and made money on it

i'd say take him by himself a time or two and see how he does. if he cant do it by himself, take your female out to show him what he's supposed to do, just till he starts doin it by himself and gets the idea, then take him by himself again

every body got thier own opion the way they got these hounds bred these days a lot of pups will start at 5 -6 mons old but to me that is eariler than i would start one i never started one before 10 mons old but thats me you start a pup at 6 mons old hunt it hard probly going to burn it out before it is a year old jmo

Check out Wesley Sanfords DVD Tree My Pup, and see what he teachs them at 6 and 8 weeks old. You will be suprised for sure.

I have heard of that...i just dont want to do like hillbilly56 says and burn them out...it might be best to wait. Ive waited this long whats another couple months gonna hurt.

I think its ok to start taking the pup to the woods on walks by its self. I would not take it with the other young dog. If the young dog has any bad habits the pup may pick them up. Also if the puppy trees a coon on these walks thats fine, but I think what Mr. Jonh is talking about in his books are the people that start using drags and showing them caged coons at an early age and over do it. I have never seen a puppy get tired of going for walks in the woods, they learn so much just being out there. But I have seen them get tired of barking at a coon hide or caged coon over and over again. I wait till they are around 10 months old myself before showing them coons, but have them running lose in the woods as soon as I can.

At this age any training should be short and sweet. Also Coons seem to be denned up alot. I would wait so that you can put the pup on some coons so that it can understand what it's suposed to do.

hell my last pup was treeing his own coon since he was 5 mths. he is a little over a year and a half and is still going strong. his mother was 9 months treeing her own coon and will be 5 come spring and still going strong. im not wasting my time raising a pup until they are a year old and taking a chance of them not turning out. if they cant tree an easy coon at 10 mths they are gone around here. and yes ive trained alot of pups and yes ive had alot treeing there own before 10 months. i say hunt your pup but just be careful how you go about it!!!

I like for my pups to be pups and i start them at an older age,i usually keep them for many years,so there's plenty of time to enjoy them.

The pup before the one I got now treed her first coon at 7 months all alone..She could tree about any coon she struck.She however had no hunt to her.As long as you walked her across a track.She would tree it..I tried hunting her with dogs that would go..Didnt work.She never paid another dog any attention. Whats wick say about that? I kept her till she was 2 and she only went good one time..Did I do it to her walking her as a baby? I've always walked them when they were real young!

I think it all depends on the pup. If he/she is ready to work dont hold him back. Besides at 6 months the only thing I might do with him is run a coon hide for him and I take them out when I go coon hunting. If all they do is play let them play but if the older dogs get treed leash them up and tie them back after you let them smell the tree. If they want to tree have at it if not, no big deal he is a puppy at least he is out having fun. eventuallywhen he gets older he will have to work or he be tied up while the rest have all the fun.

I have had him out on these walks and he is not scared to get in the dark. I just didnt know whether to start showing him coon and walking him on feeders and stuff is advised at this time. I think i will start him alone as i do not want any of my gyps habits coming on him. I guess i can use this time to work with the gyp and get her straightend out until he is ready.

I start all my pups at six to eight months old, and cull by twelve months. I dont push them to start but let them start at thier own pace. But mine have been bred to start early and I like it that way. I think that the older you wait the longer/harder they are to start.

I agree alot with what Wick says. The man is a Pioneer in the sport. I dont understand why people are quick to bash him or his books. He does a trendmous amount of good for the youth and the sport of coon hunting. Chances are, he has hunted more in one year than most of us have in our lifetime.

I think each pup is different you will find age has nothing to do with it is there personality...I do exposure to the woods in the day is a good way to start

i've heard of pups treeing their own coon at 6 months. that's fine that's fantastic. if something bad would have happened out in the woods to that pup chances are it would have been done 4 life. ur pup isn't going to lose anything by waiting 3 or 4 more months but u r taking a risk by bringing it out at such and early age. choice of the hunter

Tree my pup video is the best ive seen, and no i dont train like wesley shows on the video, i dont have the time.. But you get out of the pup what you put in to it! He takes you through the time their born to the age of one year old. I would love to have the time to spend with a pup as wesley does.

In my opinion you can take two pups of the same age, start one pup at 6 months and the other pup at 9 months of age. (I fgiven equal hunting time from 9 months on) You will see very little difference in each pups progression (ability) when they both reach the age of 13 months.

Thus you will have 7 months training in one pup, and 4 months training in the other pup, yet both pups will be darn near equal in ability at 13 months. This is of course if both pups a similar in natural instincts when you start with them.
