What type of hunt is Southeastern Walker Days

Great

It is a very well respected hunt. They hunt about 300 dogs on Friday and Saturday night. Advance entry only. Large crowds and a lot of vendors. What more could you ask for!

Best hunt there is I believe as far as polite ppl and vendors. Lots of things close by if you have a family in voncord so no one ever gets bored.

terrain

you could end up in the mountains in the west or the swamps in the east. hunted some rural areas and also have hunted in the belmont city limits(never again)! its just like any other hunt. it is the luck of the draw!

If you hunt south, east, or anywhere "close" to the fairgrounds, the walking will be easy. If you go much north it gets a little steeper. If you go west for a couple of hours, it can get very steep very quickly!
Can't answer about the feeders. If you go west much at all, you better pray for a feeder bucket because you will not stand a chance against the folks who hunt close to the fairgrounds whether they are using feeders or not!
I would love to know what the top five scorers were the last five years and exactly what counties they were guided to. I would be willing to bet that none of those high scores were obtained in, west of, or north of Burke county! I am tempted to say south of too but I know Cleveland county seems to have a decent coon population.

Does anyone know the answer to this question?

Another point to ponder. I can remember going to this event probably 12 or 15 years ago and it was small and parking was a breeze. I started going back three years ago and could not believe what I saw. People everywhere, sellers everywhere, taking 30 minutes to just get parked, parking people in overflow areas, vendors selling lots of stuff, dogs and pups for sale everywhere. I was shocked at how this event had grown from 15 years ago to 3 years ago.
You will love this event whether you hunt or not.

Probably in the top 5 for hunts across the country! Comparable to the Autumn Oaks, Grand American, Winter Classic and so forth. I live just 10 minutes from Salisbury, NC and their will be plenty for you and your family to do there. The number of people on the grounds is unreal. From vendors, to dog traders; From people just walking and looking to nite hunters entered. As far as the number of registered nite hunters I believe it very well may be the largest.

To answer your question yes it is a pre-entry only hunt.

As for terrain, stay within a 20 mile radius around the club and the hunting should be gravy, coon population may very. More than likely if you stay close to the club you will be hunting farm land, it can be very rural or very urban just depends. The terrain can be a mild mix between hills and swamps but nothing to be to concerned over.

Go an hour or 50 miles in any direction it could be a totally different story. East of the club and you could be dealing with some possibly pretty big rough swamps. You have a few big lakes and several big rivers out that way too. Farm land is pretty common here as well.

A hour heading due West you are in the hills just like that, very far North and it's hills again. But I would be more worried about ending up around the far Western tip of the state more than anything, it can be some hellish hunting there, I'm talking about mountains!

As for past hunt winners several have been guided and won from hunting right here in Rowan County, just 20 minutes from the fair grounds. I knew the guide and know where they went, it's a fenced in private tract of over 3,000 acres. Some of the best hunting you'll find. However I hunt just out side of the fence on a joining piece of land and coon can be very hard to tree there. It's very much a case of the grass being greener on the other side and in this case it's true.

This last paragraph lends much credence to what I stated earlier and does not surprise me at all!

Lets do something fun....

I am going to name some counties and give a rating as to how well the top five scores would fare by hunting in these counties.

Excellent chances of scoring high:
Rowan
Iredell
Stanly
Montgomery
Rockingham
Davidson
Moore
Randolph
Chatham
Forsyth
yadkin
Cabarrus
Union
Anson
Fair chance of scoring high:
Gaston
Lincoln
Catawba
Alexander
Cleveland

Burke or any county west of there can probably just hang it up as I do not see any cast having a chance of a competing score!
I do not include any other counties because I think to hunt these counties may push the cast to get back to the fairgrounds in time but there are excellent counties to hunt in on east of where I have noted!

For that matter, can anyone tell me of a cast that has been guided in or west of Burke county that ever had a chance of scoring well enough to be in contention?

Your exactly right and its very likely to be another winner crowned hunting this tract again very soon. As for the number of winners that's came from hunting this area? I don't really know but the one that came from this particular tract I believe was two years ago. My buddy guided the winning cast to this oasis of coons that particular year and has had a winning cast member with a score to make the final four cast in almost every other year he's guided. The names and locations of which however are a closely guarded secret.

A few I've hunted with some success and that have a high likelihood of producing winners are:
Rowan
Davidson
Wilkes
Davie
Randolph

Those are my picks but are all just a guess, a poll for this would be better served. I would like to hear the people's opinions of the coon populations for their own county.

.............

....same as the rest of the large hunts............you get a good guide/draw, you'll love it, win or lose.....................you get an area where coons are as scarce as black panthers, not as much fun...........

I'll tell you this much you want to hunt in the Belmont City limits and you want to draw Tony Burgamy or Chris Simmons or a few of the others who might be hunting around there. Them boys got coons. I used to go and hunt with Tony alot and let me tell you they got some coons. I also had Roy Latham as a guide one year that man had some coons as well. I drew the mountains several years ago and scored 725+. It is the same as any other hunt it aint about what county you draw its what guide you draw

While 725 is a good score, it is not typical of a two hour hunt where I am from. What do you mean by "mountains"? Where were you hunting specifically and we will see if you are making a correct assumption?
725 or even more can easily be a typical score in the counties around the fairgrounds.
While I agree that it is the guide you draw, the county you hunt will have more difference on how many coon you score.
Give me a guide with mediocre spots in and around the fairgrounds with no buckets, and I will take that quicker than a guide with great spots and buckets in the mountains of WNC any day.
Trust me, I know. I have been hunting both for 25 years now!

If I understand the scoring process correctly, then you must have scored at least four coons. Is that right? If you were in the mountains proper, then I would bet in a two hour hunt, all of these were on buckets or at least half of them.

I was not saying you were not in the mountains. Just wondering where specifically. I would agree you were in the mountains but I have seen some guys come from flat country and get "close" to the mtns. in some rolling hills and still call it mtns. Just making sure you were not one of those

Posted by Carolina Style on 01-14-2011 10:04 PM:

intellectualist I know exactly what you mean by the hills statement. I went and tried a dog a few years ago in Beckley WV. I dont think my legs have recovered yet! I bought the dog and granded him out. That dog was my buddy till he died he was just grateful to get out of those mountains I believe!
