New Empire Beagle Club Blizzard Challege Report

The first "Buffalo Blizzard Challenge" lived up to its name today! 14 degrees and a moderate snowfall made for a great setting. 18 dogs were entered by 8am, a few less than expected, but a good turn out for our first trial of this kind. After rules were went over, and all handlers/score keepers were given score cards and radio's, they were drawn into groups of two, the 45 mile drive was taken to the running grounds. At 9:17am the first bark was let out and it was on! They runs went back and forth from short to long, and with the help of radios, every one was able to position them selves to get score. By the start of the 4th hour, we were down to 11 dogs. At 5 hrs and ten minutes in, field trial was called with ten dogs remaining down. After returning to the legion, score cards were turned in, and combined for each of the remaining dogs. This is the results for the title of "King and Queen" of the North, and all placing dogs!

King of the North, SMOKES CREEK MAXIMUS CRANK owner, Rick Giermata
Queen of the North, SMOKES CREEK MOYA McGEE, owner, Rick Giermata

1st Smokes Creek Maximus Crank, 195pts Rick Giermata
2nd Smokes Creek Ne'Gro Diablo, 190pts Rick Giermata
3rd Smokes Creek Proper Stomp, 175pts Rick Giermata
4th Smokes Creek Moya McGee, 160pts Rick Giermata (high scoring opp sex)
5th Lee's Screaming Blue Sky, 155pts Lee Boyce
6th K&C's Silver Bullet, 140pts Carl Mirabella
7th Tom's Tiger, 120pts Tom Lewis
8th Ranger, 90pts Jason Kennedy
9th Slammin Sam, 80pts Don Sandino
10th Hunt em Up Sandy, 70pts Paul Welsh

Thank you all who helped or entered. We hope this even will grow each year in fun and numbers! Note: Rick split $260 between the 6 other handlers of the placing hounds. $43.00 each! Congratulations again to all for a great time afield!

Rick With Max the King and Moya the Queen

Marcus, I sure hope your not related to him !! lol He is from Lynndonville NY.

Guys, this was a great event! We felt it was a very fair way to score the hounds, as 8 judges in the field with radio's sure were able to see alot. The runs were for the most part pretty good. Around the third hour the seperation of the pack began. We had only one sour comment, but if your dog leaves the pack and wont go back in, there isnt much any format can do to help you...

With all now said and done, we will be making this a yearly event with hopes the trial format will catch on and the entries will grow next year... We came up with some better ideas on a few point changes for next one, so Im sure it can onlt get better. Great runs, good hounds, cool trophy's and a cash pot of $360 made it a awesome event!

Thanks again to all who helped make this work and congratulations to all who entered a hound!! You showed your guts and confidence in your hounds!

P.S. At 9yrs old, this was Maximus Crank's last trial. I have had alot of fun with him over the years as he may be the best Ive owned to date. Thanks to all who have judged, hunted, bred to and raised pups by him.

Yours in the sport of beagling,
Ricky G

Thank you Fred, only thing missing was you and my buddy Ace!
Steve, your right...Age was catching up quick on Max, and I noticed him fade a lil near trial end... The kid was nippin at his feet. Another half hr may have changed it. It was nice to see the old dog run like the old days for his last hurah!

Glad we didnt do it today.. I hunted hard from 9 till 4pm, only to run one rabbit all day! We got a good blanket last night and the bunnies vanished???? Go figure??

Thanks again guys!

Hunted him today for seven hrs! There will be no change in that. Max has turned into the kennel coach over the years and is a measuring stick for the up and comers!!

Funny, I sorta felt bad with the sweep, so at least I could pass on the cash so they all could drown their sorrows at the bar...lol Everyone including myself, had a great time being a part of this day.. The ball busting was so bad, a day at church is needed very soon! (maybe two)

What made this special was the sportsmanship displayed. When you stop having fun, its time to find a new hobby!

Thanks again!

Ricky G
