Not to sound like I know it all but I have a male dog that will be 6 this year and if we hunt him more that a couple times a week I have to feed him between 8 and 12 cups of food a day. Your dog must have a high metabolism. I feed diamond extreme and diamond premium. If I were you I would bump the amount of food up until he gains enough weight and then adjust accordingly from there.

He may be ugly but he looks good on the wood.

I've got a male that is just flat out built tall and skinny, i've tried many different things to help him gain weight and he just doesnt, the vets have even said its how he's built... Could that be with your dog?

You can always try lard and ramen noodles. I use a half a cup of lard and 1 package of ramen to get a dogs weight up. I feed this on top of 2 cups of feed.I buy lard in 5lb tubs from walmart for around 6$ I also get the ramen by the box at walmart for under 2$.

The lard and ramen are fat and carbs which is also an energy source.

I have a bluetick that can't keep weight on.I had him up to 10 cups a day trying to fatten him up After doing a Chem panel the vet put him on 1/8 of a teaspoon of Tylan with each feeding. Within a month he was back down to 5 cups and at good weight.

That dog looks real good to me concidering how much hunting he is getting, provided he is hunting hard as a birddog which he looks like he/she is capable of. I say in shape ,for this time of year. If the annimal cops are after your , I would just go free choice feed and keep on hunting him hard. I can't start hunting my dogs hard like that until the a'gatores go to bed (about a month ago) mine are just getting in shape in my opinion.
I look for bright eyes and wagging tails is what tells the tail. Heck , I'm fifty someting, and this time of year I'm still trotting around with my ribs and hipbones showing, and proud of it.

I know I been rode hard and put up wet but it don't bother me none.

Try 1/4 cup peanut oil over feed

Posted by rghnd123 on 01-07-2011 12:50 PM:

weight gainer

10 pounds of the fattiest hamburger meat you can buy
6 cups oats
10 eggs
2 cups molasses
1 cup olive oil
Mix together and make balls about 1/2 pound. Feed to him every other day. This is also good to bring a nursing female back to shape.
You can freeze them and thaw when needed.

How old is the dog. Some young dogs are like this. It takes them years for their bodies to calm down and fill out. I've had dogs like that.

Adding a probiotic would help him absorb more of the food he eats. Probios is a good one. Some one told me to add refried beans. That didn't work for my dog, but who knows.

Have you ever seen a skinny person? Some dogs and some people are just naturally skinny. Heck, when i graduated High school I only weighed 127 lbs. I wouldn't mind having that metabolism rate today.

If your dog isn't acting tired or wore out I wouldn't worry too much about it. Our hounds are meant to be athletes. Have you ever seen a pudgy triathon athlete?

Nah. It'll be more fun for me to be thinking of you googleing it and watching what comes up.
rghnd123 already posted the recipe for it here.

One thing to keep in mind is the time of year. Make sure the house they have keeps them warm. A dog sitting out shivering will lose wieght just as fast as one under fed or hunted hard.

Raw Hamburger

1 cup of the fattiest (usually cheapest) raw hamburger per day to what you are already feeding him. This makes it simple you don't need to add a bunch of ingredients if it is a quality dog food. He doesn't look bad I have seen worse on here.

If you have a BJ's or Sams Club you can get the bulk cheap burger for a great price. Just don't overfeed a dog like this he will have loose stools and crap all day.

weight

I carried my dog (Loggerhead) to the vet today. He has been sluggish and losing weight. I have been hunting him regulary. The vet ran some tests and it looks like it could be 1 of the tick diseases. We won't know for 7 to 10 days. His blood was rather thin also. Any body seen negative effects from tick diseases

YES

One of my B&Ts got thin, was tested & had Guiardia(sp) & couldn't recover, even with aggressive Vet treatment - had to be put down.

If you have any trappers in your area beaver meat will get them in great shape gain weight and look good.

Posted by Joey Donelson on 01-07-2011 07:57 PM:

Tick disease very well could be the problem. You won't be able to keep weight on them no matter what or how much you feed. The medicine to treat it is pretty reasonable and a lot cheaper than all that extra food. Hope everything works out for you.

My dog was the same way...till i started feeding her deer meat scraps from the butcher...looking good after a month on them.

When I bought this dog here is what he looked like.
Not to bad but a little skinny.

I have been hunting him 4 nights a week and he has gotten a little thinner.

I have always fed Sportmix 26/18 or the black bag of black gold.
I have now mixed diamond extreme athlete 50/50 with my sportmix.

I have wormed him with everything including drouncit.

He still will not gain weight.

I have started today giving him 1.5 cup of feed in the morning, 2.5 cups of feed around 4pm and 1 cup when we

get home from hunting.

you maid a dog food comerical already.i dont care how
many cups mine eats as long as he looks good.i would
sell him in a heart beat if i thought he was to thin and
still could eat more
