anyone own foxhounds and do foxhound field trials?

As soon as I know whether I will be deploying overseas or not, I am going to get a coonhound. I know I've been saying that for a long time, but the military keeps changing its mind. And I don't want to get a dog and then deploy for months. Anyway, I already have a beagle, and I want to get a coonhound too. Also, I was thinking about a foxhound. However, from what I've read the Masters of Foxhounds Association frowns on the private ownership of foxhounds. Still, I recently started getting the Hunter's Horn magazine, and the people in there own their own hounds. I can't find any other board online where I could ask questions, and I thought some of you might know about it. Is it rare to own foxhounds privately? And, I know that a beagle or a coonhound can either hunt in a pack or as a single dog. If I get one I only want to get one dog, but do foxhounds ever hunt as a single dog?

I know a lot of my questions on here are stupid, but I'm just learning about all this and have lots of questions. And, I have things on hold right now because of my military committment.

I've never run fox with hounds, but do own July hounds that we run deer with. Our's have toned it down some as they've aged, but if you plan on hunting ANYTHING with a foxhound be prepared to buy a tracking system...unless you only plan on turning it loose in a pen. Just about every type of foxhound I've hunted with is high-powered to the hilt unless they've just absolutely been started with a slower working dog. It's not unusual for a couple of our hunting buddies to have several dogs that they turn loose in the early morning drives run literally all day-they often don't find them until late in the evening or the next morning. That being said, I love hearing them run, but be prepared!

I would even use u tracker on them in the pen. Also better look into getting a 4 wheeler, cause you gonna have to run em down in a pen

Fox Dogs

years back, before Hunting Clubs and, Migrant Land owners, I,e, people that moved into the areas from out of State or other places, or where descendents of Older landowners . we ran our hounds freely and didn't need pens, we didn't need tracking systems either, we turned our hounds loose in areas that had as few fenced fields as possible so our dogs wouldn't molest farm animals, and wouldn't risk injury from climbing net wire fences. we looked for Gray fox mostly because they would only run short distances unlike the red fox or Coyotes.
we built fires sat around the fire until the strike dogs hit a good trail, and then added fresh hounds as the race picked up.
iv seen as many as 25 to 30 hounds on the ground @ the same time. most of the time the fox would get away to run another night. it was never really the intent of the hunter to kill the fox because the joy was never in the kill but listening to the hounds run a way and then make the big swing back towards the camp.

Has it ever occured to some of y'all that Julie has been asking questions because she might be interested in traditions that been bred into her ? You worry about anti's, then turn around and post photo's and clips showing stuff, that help to give the most help.
If you have read her posts over the years, she is interested in things because that she grew up with the stories, and might want find the link back to her family. Male or female there are certain things that are bred in, people as well as dogs. If she wants to try fox, coon or rabbit hunting, she should be able to do it !

Thanks Glenn!! I can assure everyone here that I am as pro-hunting with hounds as anyone breathing. My favorite dogs are coonhounds, beagles, and foxhounds. I also like pointers and labs. Yes, I ask what are seemingly dumb questions because I want to learn as much as I can. I haven't been around foxhounds much so I have more questions about them. I am waiting to get started because I'm waiting on my reserve unit to ever let me know what is up next. That dictates what I can do right now. When I do get my first coonhound, I will post a picture on here with me and him/her. So yes, I am very pro-hunting and pro-hounds so you need not worry.

I run foxhounds. You do not need a pack of them. I ran coyotes for years with just 2 dogs.
