characteristics of a coon dog not a good dog a coon dog.
What makes a "coon dog".
Personally i think theres a difference between a good dog and a coon dog. a coon dog is a hard tree dog, loud, bread good thats all i can think of. tell me what u think.

Hunt 'em down-Walker Hounds
First of all Welcome! now, that all depends on who you ask, some like a dog with a squall mouth on track, others wont have one. Some people want a tree dog that tries to climb the tree, others may want there dog to sit down and bawl treed. Its all in what you like, Me personally Give me a Dog with a Bawl Mouth that will bust your ear drums, with a long loud locate and a good chop/bawl mouth on the tree. But they dont need to climb the tree as long as they are there at the base of it i could care less if they are layin down as long as they are treed!!!!! Oh yeah and it helps a little if there is actually somethin IN the tree lol

coondog
My idea of a coondog: first he has to be intellegent, he has to be people friendly, he has to get along with other dogs well. He has to have the desire to hunt alone as well as with company. He has to be able to start a track and finish it somewhere no matter how tough. He has to tree and hold a tree no matter how long it takes me to get there. I like to start with puppies because I will know how this pup was socailized that is very important. Not all pups make it but if given a fair chance and started right you are much better off. I will not have an ill dog I don't care how many coons he can tree. Ability and desire are the most important and let the rest fall into place.
