I can understand why the people that had already sent their entry's in are upset. I'm glad I wasn't one of them.

changing the purina race was a huge mistake i think it will realy hurt the big hunts i know a bunch of people that dont like it !

Posted by Junior L on 12-28-2010 03:51 AM:

My question is, were the people that are complaining going to run the race or just looking for something to complain about.
What i don't understand is people complaining that had no interest in running.
Do you listen to a few of them whine or the people on the west side of the Miss. Riv. complain because on the distance they have to travel. You are not going to please everyone..
At our Ark. St. hunt last year we had 1 purina dog, and hunted about 155 in 2 nights.

why

why they change one of the biggest hunts S.C. has to where it is not a purina points event?

Not sure why they changed it but do know that I have no chance of Purina points at The GA (1700 miles round trip) and no chance at the WC (1800 miles/trip) , maybe a breed specific rqe (1) at Southern Redbone Championship (1400 miles/trip) , no chance at American Redbone Days (300 miles/trip this year) , no chance at National Redbone Days (500 miles/trip this year) , none at Autumn Oaks (550 miles/trip) and none at the UKC World (500 miles/trip this year). Along with my own State hunt and what RQE's I need that's been my schedule for years whenever I can possible make it and have missed very few and many other local events also with nothing to do with Purina Points.
Our state hunt is back on this year and that's all I gained compared to opportunities lost. If I want to play Purina I'll have to pick up more miles at other state events and I'll say straight out it's not worth it for the Purina race alone on the bench show side for sure.
I feed Purina feed and a Platinum member of the Purina Pro Club and at this point feel I've lost one of my incentives to attend the bigger hunts and most state hunts don't stack up to what was removed.

EXACTLY. IN ALL HONESTY AND SINCERITY I THINK UKC JUST MADE IT TO WHERE THE BIG MONEY ROLLERS CAN BE THE ONLY ONES THAT CAN AFFORD TO EVEN ATTEMPT A SHOT AT THE PURINA RACE NOW.

I THINK THIS DECISION WILL REALLY HURT ATTENDANCE AT BIGGER HUNTS LIKE GA, WC, SETW DAYS, WALKER DAYS ETC.

THEY MADE IT BASICALLY IF IT WASN'T A STATE HUNT OR AN RQE YOU DONT GET POINTS FOR IT, AND YOU CAN ONLY SHOW OR HUNT AND WIN AT AN RQE ONE TIME, SO THERE YOU GO.

It's not UKC decision as to what hunts are Purina Points. It falls on the Purina Committee.

WHO DETERMINES THE ENTRY FEE ???

I DON'T SEE WHERE THAT CHANGED AFTER TAKING AWAY THE PRESTIGOUS PURINA HUNT TITLE.

Really Cristy? Did you think about that much before you said it? It might affect attendance by 10 in the show and maybe 5 in the hunt but that's about it. Every year it is just a small hand full of people that run the Purina point hunts and it has always taken a lot of money to do it.

YEAH BUT THERE IS ALOT MORE PEOPLE THAT WOULD TAKE A SHOT AT RUNNING THE RACE BY ENTERING GA AND WINTER CLASSIC RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR KNOWING IF THEY WIN THEY GET PURINA POINTS.

IF I HAD A DOG I ENTERED AND WON AT BOTH, THEN I'D GIVE IT A SHOT, BUT JUST STATE HUNTS? IT'S HARD TO BE IN 2 DIFFERENT STATES EVERY WEEKEND FOR THE LITTLE MAN. ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARE USUALLY ON OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE US.

They might think they had a shot but they would soon find out other wise. It takes either several people working together or someone with money. The average person has never been able to win the Purina race and they have always had to travel to several states.

That's a very significant statement right there.
Just like hacking on UKC because you don't like a rule when I fact, UKC doesn't make the rules, the Breed Associations make them, same with the Purina schedule. UKC didn't set the schedule or pick the events, a committe chosen by Purina makes those decisions. So you prolly need to take your complaints to Purina and hope they don't just say piss on it and pull their sponsorship.

i guess the people that are given away all those dog boxes
lights etc that equal more than 500 dollars. that is more
than you would win if you ran the whole purina race.

exactly, i wanted to do the Purina race with some of my pups this year or next year (depending on how they are on the bench this year) but as an 18 year old, going to college i wont be able to drive over 8,000 miles just to hit them, maybe if i was from a rich family i could do it. and if they have the same schedule next year, i imagine not many people will be able to do it either. some day i want to have a dog that i can campaign in the Purina events (both show and hunt) which i may just have to wait until i get that dog to do it because it's pointless for me to go just the show, or just the hunt, for as far as i have to drive... i don't think it's a good schedule one bit and i think it should be changed, and i WILL try to do something about it

Well I hate to break this to yah Elizebeth but last years Purina schedule stretched from Texas and Oklahoma to Ohio and Virginia and from Wisconsin and Indiana to South Carolina and Georgia. Now I don't know the total milage but I'm betting last year was every bit as out of reach for you as this year is. Last year you had three Purina events in states bordering Wis, this year you have fived. So how was last years schedule better for you?
The Purina Race has always and will always wear out a good truck and cost more than most of us spend on 6 vacations so it is out of reach for the aveage person, this year, last year and every year.

Barry,
The entry fees are determined by the Grand American Board of Directors and approved by the Grand American club reps. UKC has no more say so in determining fees for the GA than it does for a hunt at HellHole CHA. The entry fees have been the same for years, Purina Points or not.
I have had one phone call concerning the Purina Points being removed from the GA. And , no he didn't want his money back.
The hunt numbers are a reflection on the amount of work put into making the GA a premeire event.Hopefully we will see the same thing in show entries.
I honestly don't think losing the Purina Point status will have any affect on us or on UKC's two major events.

THAT HAS TO BE THE BIGGEST COP OUT I HAVE EVER HEARD!
BESIDES THAT THE GUYS ON THE COMMITTEE AREN'T THE ONES YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN ASKING! IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE GUYS THAT MADE YOUR PROGRAM WHAT IT WAS! "THE PARTICIPANTS"!.....

Purina points won't make or break an event, it was something added that helped keep the heart beating and energy up. If you found yourself in the race you had to plan and keep track of everybody's points besides yours to keep your head in the game.
We 've gone to the big ones because we like to and if that earned points it was fun.
The Purina picture we won is the most lasting memory we have. The trophies don't last forever, we've gave and thrown away truck loads over the years. The small amount of money you might get here and there is spent and gone usually before you get home. Dog feed is shoveled up and gone tomorrow.

Actually a lot of dogs are entered in Purina events but only a few earn points to continue thru to the end.
I suspect there may be reasons we haven't heard yet why such a large change was done. It really changes very little, just a matter of agree or disagree and where you want to go.

Sorry you feel that way. BUT it's the way it's always been.

Just like UKC can't make the government lower gas prices on hunt weekends.

Just like UKC can't make hotels charge less on hunt weekends.

Just like UKC can't make the sun shine on hunt weekends.

Not trying to sound prude, but almost every hunt has a sponsering HOST and UKC just provides an organization to sanction it through.
