Slick Trees

This is the easiest thing there is to fix. Every time he trees slick just cut that tree down . Once you get down to just one tree left in the woods you will have your self one accurate hound . LMAO

depends on what the dog is slicking for. sqiurrels, not finishing tracks, sometimes just to tree.

i will take a tree dog any day, but if there isnt any tracking ability there, move on and get another dog.

some people can turn a tree dog into a real hound.,,,,,, the only downfall is that dog will always pull up slick and screw you in a hunt when you need him most.

run a shock collar on him if you look up there and dont see anything walk out with your light off with him still on the tree and light him up...dont touch him or nothing when he comes back to you make him go back in the woods...the next time he slick trees he will think about it...might have to do this a few times according how hard headed he is...but after ive done this to my reba female in 5 months ive only walked to about 3 slick trees...

Dont spend a bunch of time at an empty tree, dont be scared to disipline him at the tree and most important, i cant believe noone has touched on this.............. Upgrade dogs. Slick treeing runs in families of hounds....... a little background work and you'll find out it breeds on.

Posted by john Duemmer on 12-20-2010 04:49 PM:

I think it depends on the dog. Some just have to much tree and when they make a lose they cant help but grab a tree, and they know they dont have a coon. This type dog i think can sometimes be helped with a little disapline. The other type is a dog that just lacks tracking ability or brains and he believes he has the coon, this dog is probably hopeless.

some of the best hounds i have ever seen in the woods were slick treeing idiots when younger. I think alot of young dogs go through the slumo of slicking

???

You NEVER shock a dog after the fact. And u better be dam sure their isn't a coon in the tree if you scold him. I would box trap a squirrel and see if he bays it and shock him off it. My buddy shot a squirrel layed a track with it while warm and left it on the ground. Cut the dog loose he ran track and they burned him just as he grabbed the squirrell...he hasn't treed em since.

dwils, your and my definition of top hounds is probably different, no disrespect meant.

Be sure theres not a coon in ther tree before scolding? Common sense really, i know i have made mistakes before only to find the coon after the dog was diciplined. Not once did I ever see a dog bad about slicking, stop treeing coon, or slicking for being whipped at the tree with a coon in it.

Posted by psiskjr on 12-20-2010 05:55 PM:

Probably upset a few but, OH Well! Slick treeing idiots is what turned me against Walkers. I wont walk to many slicks before I cull. And when I cull I dont pass my problem on to others. Personally I would get me another dog. Slicking might work in night hunts but it sure dont work here!!!!

The person who posted right above this post is absolutley right on 100 percent.

Every one talks about natural ability and this and that, and these guys on this post are talking about man making a coon hound to get it enjoyable enough to hunt, then they all run out and breed to it, and wonder why there pups are 50 percent accurate????????? SIMPLY AMAZES ME!!
