dog breeding

if yourdogs are running and treeing and have good characteristics of the type of hound you like to see in the woods then breed them if you can place them in some good hunters hands and be patient.be sure you can afford them, pups are costly if you can't place them.some breed just because of bloodline,i would not recomend this,to many try this method already.however sometimes it works out, bought a pup from ayoung fellow kinda to help him move 1,thought i had a dud, showed her a hide over and over and no response, almost sold her, only 4mth's old and scared of hide oranything, then came in 1 night showed her afresh coon and she went off the chain over it.got a feeling about her when i first saw her, then again i seem to have a knack at picking a pup or pups, seem to do it over and over consistantly, even for the owner's. goodluck and strive for the BEST nothing less.

Thanks for the advise. Is bloodlines everything buyers look for? Is having a garuntee on pups a bad idea? And you mentioned them being expensive, would this be shots and food that you are talking about?

In order to sell pups, you gotta have a reputation as a hunter and your dogs have to get it done and people gotta know this ...

.. and then , breeding your own female to your male raises eyebrows ... not many folks are big supporters of backyard breeding when it comes to performance animals ..

.. I'd say you are off on the wrong foot and would be better off picking up cans for extra money than trying to breed dogs ...

If you have to come on here and ask these questions, there is no need to be breeding anything. Not trying to be rude but......

you better just breed for yourself, and friends if you have any that want pups.

I wouldnt discourage anyone that wanted to breed thier own dogs for THEMSELVES and friends. BUT!!!! if you think you are going to make money selling pups I would reccomend you dont waste your time and money. And it does take both to raise pups. Then if you and your dogs are unknown you will have a hard time placing the pups. Check out the classifieds, there are dogs there that the price keeps going down and they still dont sell. Not that theres anything wrong with the dogs they just arent "known".

breed what you want too its your business

Look at the qualities and faults of your female both physically and functionally (hunt characteristics). If she has excellence in both then seek a male that also has excellence in both. Your females weakness is an area of great importance in selecting the stud. Develop knowledge and start with excellence then improve from there. Best to guarantee health and that a dog is free from genetic defects. Hard to guarantee functionality because that has a lot to do with training. If the sire and dam and grandparents show excellence then the pups will have good potential. Only breed to improve the breed as a whole. Simply making more coondogs has no real value. JMO

If your doing it to make money...forget it! Coonhound pups are very hard to sell and I don't care if they have a 5 generation all grand pedigree, they are hard to sell. I sell my pups for $250 and have worked hard to get to where my name and my dogs names mean a little something. I've been in coonhounds for 12 yrs. and I'm just to that point now. I offer a full 1 yr. guarantee with all my pups, still not a huge selling point. These aren't those little ankle biters that sell for $1000 or Bulldogs that go for $1500, these are dogs that almost always go to hunters and if the market is flooded (and it is) you will probally end up giving the pups away. Coonhounds don't have litters, they have herds! Are you prepared for a litter of 12-14 pups and then raise them til they are 8 weeks old, giving them all their shots and de-worming? Are you prepared to house that many pups if you can't get rid of them? In the last 12 years, I've raised 5 litters, because I learned early on, they don't move well and I couldn't afford to keep them all. So now I only breed if I want to keep a pup or 2 for myself and pray that they don't have more then 8 pups. My best suggestion is to check out the classifieds and get an idea what is on there and see how long the post has been there. If 2 mos. later they are still trying to move pups, that is a sign that pups just aren't selling well. Sad, but true.

Couldn't have said it any better. Its tough out there. Even when you think you got the best thing going, you'll end up practically giving the pups away.

Golden wisdom!

I think those that are out to make money breeding are not looking for the best interests of the breed!

I've had one litter, for my own use. She raised 5, I kept 2, 1 stud fee pup, sold one CHEAP, and gave 1 away to get a fella off walcurs LOL!
