this topic is probably in the top 2 of most discuseed on here, lol.

anyhow. i been feeding black gold, black bag, but thats only because my neighbor next door deals it and sells it to us 22 $ a bag.

as far as for the money. there are several good feeds. ultra is really good feed. purple bag this time of year. its 24/20 ratio

if your looking for high protein for cold months and hard hard hunting go with Pro-plan if your wanting to "splurge"

if you want to save, i have seen same results with Exceed from Sams club. its good feed

I have been feeding Diamond Maintenance for twenty five years when it started off at $12. Now it's 23$. My pups get one bag of puina puppy chow to help my conscience till it runs out, then they go on the Maintenace. I feed more when hunting hard and alot less in summer. I have no complaints with it. Lately, 4 weeks, I have benn feeding " Hound Favorite" made by OMC , a local miller ( Orangeburg Milling Company) (within sight of the Grand American) that is something like 22 crude and 14 fat. I have been running out on Saturday when the feed store is closed and i can get this stuff at the grocery store is the reason why. It's $16 for 50 lbs. It smells like horse sweet feed but the dogs like it and I have just started hunting hard so the dogs are losing weight because they are getting in running shape but no worse than regular. It seems like pretty good feed as far as the stool goes. I'll probably go back to Diamond whenever I quit running out on the weekends. LOL

Really fellows, back in the first Depression a fellow wrote a song. Said.
Well I cooked some bisquits for my dog and laid them on the shelf.
Times got so hard, I killed that dog and ate them bisquits myself.

Start with looking at the ingredients of the food. After that, you should be able to make a good choice.

food

There is no such thing as the best food, everyone has opinions and most of us hunters have tried just about all kinds of different feeds. Certain feeds work better for different dogs. Do you keep your dogs on concrete? I would suggest a food with a high protien and less fat = less ****! not right away though all feeds take getting used too. Diamond is a great food and so is River run but like I said None are the best. Your hound will tell you and remember as you switch feeds it takes a little bit for the dogs system to get used to it so don't think it sucks if they get the runs the first couple of days its natural. Good luck

I have fed Purina Pro Plan Adult for many years and have been very happy with the results. However, over the past six months or so I can't keep weight on several of my dogs and have resorted to feeding twice as much 2x a day. My dogs are on a routine worming program etc. so that is not the issue. Anyone else having this problem with Purina?

Mr. Davis, I too used both Pro-Plan Chicken and Rice and Performance for a couple years with good results. Earlier this year however, my dogs began having coat and weight problems. Like you, I knew they had been wormed out sufficiently, so I changed to TSC 4-Health brand dog food. My dogs are back to normal now, and most keep a healthy weight on less feed than they got eating Pro-Plan. I really liked Purina when I first started feeding it, and probably would try it again, but I've been happy with the results I'm getting from 4-Health...plus it's cheaper, and has no corn, wheat, or soy.

I fed Pro Plan for a couple years, I still feed performance to one female. I switched the others to Purina One with no noticeable difference in appearance, weight, or energy level. Looks identical in the bag as well.

I haven't noticed any problems with the Pro Plan Performance in regards to having to feed more or dogs not looking as good, my female looks great as always.

I know there several options out there, just wanted some good opinions and I appreciate the information.

Posted by RED REBELS on 11-16-2010 07:55 PM:

i feed Hunters Special (blue or green bag) for my older dogs and Pedigree puppy chow for puppies. i used to feed Purina Dog Chow, but it didnt have enough for my younger (more high strug hounds) and had too much for my older (lazier) houds, now my older dog gets the blue bag and my younger dog gets the green.

i do feel that Pedigree is the best for puppies! for the first few weeks i add milk replacer to it, or for this litter it will be all winter, but i also add some milk replacer to all my dog's feed during the winter.

Black Gold - black bag in winter, Grey bag in summer. i know a guy that always switches his dog food to the "best" and most expensive. i told him switching food all the time hurts your dog more then it helps. there are alot of good ones though, it seems like some dogs do better on certain foods then others.

Actually the feeling among a lot of vets now is that it is best to switch your dogs feed once or twice a year. The reasoning behind it is almost every dog food has deficiencies of certain ingredients and that switching once or twice a year is healthier on the dog because it prevents the dog from becoming deficient. Granted most foods claim to be completely balanced and have everything needed many times a high percentage of vitamins and minerals are lost during the cooking process.

black gold..

is the best feed that i have found around here.. black back in the winter and yellow bag in the summer to my old dogs.. and the blue bag to my pups....

Posted by jamie stall on 11-16-2010 11:46 PM:

sport mix has corn in the 2 nd ingredient, vets say that is what you want to stay away from.

Posted by hilbily on 11-17-2010 01:42 AM:

Black Gold

Black Gold 26/18.
From my experiences my dogs are on the thicker side i admit... But when hunting with others mine don't get tired and hang around the truck. The will hunt as long as you can hang.

Pride

Pride dog food is really good dog food and it wont hurt the wallet either.
