AMBOR and UKC

After all these years of owning only American Eskimos, we have added a mixed breed to our household: Franklin. It appears Franklin is some sort of smooth Collie mix. We're thinking we'll obedience train him and take him with us to some of the UKC shows/trials we get to. My question is this: do I need to register him with AMBOR first and then get a UKC number? I'm not at all familiar with how this works.

No need to go through AMBOR first. The first place I registered my mix was UKC.

You can register directly with UKC. You do not have to register with AMBOR.

AMBOR is a separate organization from UKC. It's kind of like a "breed" club for those with mixed breed dogs (only with no talk about breeding, lol).

I show a mixed breed in Obedience and my dog is registered with AMBOR. I feel it's good to be part of an organization that will push for opportunites for mixed breed dogs. AMBOR's primarily focus is on Obedience (American Mixed Breed Obedience Registry), but I wouldn't be surprised to see them acknowledge Agility a bit more down the road. There are some good mixed breeds in Agility. They recognize the best mixed breed dogs in Obedience throughout the country at the end of the year with trophies & certificates. They also have a quarterly newsletter, and even had an AMBOR dog show in Indianapolis 2 years ago. It was open to mixed breed dogs only (kind of like a specialty) and had Obedience & Agility.

Actually the UKC has done a great job of pushing for opportunities for mixed breed dogs. As you may or may not know, it was in 1994 that the UKC opened up the competition sports to mixed breed dogs. Before that mixed breed owners had virtually nowhere to show their dogs. I give the UKC a lot of credit for allowing mixed breed dogs to compete in the performance events. It was a good thing to do that benefitted a large segment of dog owners that were otherwise disenfranchised.

Of course, you should spay or neuter your mixed breed (actually you have to, to get the LP# necessary to compete in UKC events), then you should start training him and see where his talents lie. Some of the best dogs I've had over the years were mixed breeds.

OK, so I can just get an LP for good ole Franklin. That's good. He's starting Obedience training on the 16th which he needs desperately! He's a lanky, leggy two year old with asperations of being Superman and leaping tall buildings in a single bound! And, yes, he was neutered before we adopted him from Adopt-A-Pet. It's been a long time since I've trained a dog in Obedience and actually done trials. Should be fun.
