Nerve damage??

I got a pup this just turned 9 months old..about a month ago now already he took off on me for the night and when he showed up the next day he couldnt walk on his back left leg.it was swelled all up from his paw up to ankle..What i noticed first was he just drug his foot around upside down.didn't hardly seem to feel pain at all..took him to a vet the next morning and they told me had infection in leg so put him on meds..swelling went down right away but still held his paw upside down and they said nerves were damaged...They were very unhelpful with follow up so I took him to a new vet they thought something was broke took x-ray everything was fine.. gave some more meds for pain and said he felt most pain in his knee area so they thought he had similar injury like tweaking an ACL...They told me to just wait it out so I have been...He now can put his foot down on the ground when he is standing still and standing up on the side of pen..but still cant put all his weight on it..and his foot will still just flop upside down and its like he doesn't even notice it..Right now I'm gettin pretty upset with the vets not giving me and real straight answers on what to do and whats actually going on............I would like to hear anyones suggestions if they have ever seen anything like this..Thank you.

If dogs are the same as people when it comes to nerve damage, it could take up to a few months to heal. I was just checking online and was wondering if it could be a sciatica nerve issue, that would take quite a while to heal up.

See if you have a holistic vet in the area. Could be that the hip or hips are out of wack putting pressure on the nerve. Some of the holistic vets practice chiropractic on dogs. I have seen this work a time or two in my area.

An ACL tear wouldn't cause the dog not to be able to move it's foot. It may be he got his leg caught up and cut off circulation. Is the leg cold? That would cause swelling below where the tight restriction was. If long and tight enough it can kill all the tissue making the limb useless. Watch for dying tissue. If the leg is hot then that is inflammation and possibly infection. Then antibiotics and maybe some Epsom Salt soaks. Hope to be helpful. Sorry to hear the vets won't help.

do you have a local vet school you can take it to?? sometimes they are more helpful at investigating odd things than regular vets.

thank you for the comments..We have ISU which is one of the best vet programs in the country which was suggested by one of the vets to take him there.
