Fur Prices?

Anyone heard what coon hide prices are going to be? I have heard some ungodly numbers by local hunters but dont no how true it is. I am from Ohio and was just wondering if anyone had heard anything.

I would be surprised to see country fur buyers paying $20 even for XXXL northern extra heavy's. I'd empty the freezer tomorrow if someone here would pay that. Early reports are about an $8 average across the board on prime coon. Most northern states are just now seeing prime coon with small coon and wet sows still blue. When I lived in southern Michigan I saw most coon prime up around Nov. 1. Here most are prime by Oct. 15th.

One thing many people don't understand is how the country fur buyer buys fur. He usually knows what he needs to hit for an average so here's how it goes.

You take him 20 hides. He wants to get them all for $8.00 each hoping to sell them for at least a $14.00 average making $6.00 per hide.

He pays you:

2 @ $18
4 @ $14
4 @ $9
5 @ $5
2 @ $3
3 @ $1

You walk away with $162 in your pocket and say "WOW! I can't believe I got $18 for those 2 coon and $14 for those 4 other big ones!!!! I thought they were only paying eight dollars!" Guess what, you got $8.10.

If the market tanks and he sells all his coon for $8 he worked his butt off for nothing. If the market peaks and he averages $18 then it payed off but he still worked his butt off. If they don't buy like that they're not in business long. One bad season has put more wannabe fur buyers out of business than I can remember.

Fur prices controlled by supply, demand and the value of the dollar.

Fur Fish and Game

Hit my doorstep yesterday... Says 20 for a northern jumbo, not many guys on here catching those..... Most of us are catching eastern coat types at best... 5 bucks probably a bit higher if you have big ones that are prime and you flesh and stretch em.

SD fur prices

I just sold 72 coon last week and averaged $10.88 a buddy of mine sold five and averaged $15.25. I sell around 300-400 coon a year so the buyer usually cuts me a little better deal. Last year I sold all of my coon at $9.00 straight across the board. Seems to me like things are looking up this year. Oh yeah and my rats just sold for $5.00 straight across the board. All of these prices where on the carcass.

same conversation for the last 20 years they always say they will give you so much then when you get there they start dollar here two dollars here im leaving mine in the woods and like someone said it is supply and demand, if everyone quit selling them for a couple dollars the demand would go up.

i dont even plan on keepin them. there more valuable to my dogs then me. i only take a couple a week. keeps farmers happy.

You shot 120 thirty pound plus coons this year? I mean I believe you have some big coon, but I fail to believe that every coon you shot was pushing 30. Maybe 119, but there had to be at least one that was 25 pounds or so....

Yea what he said.

I talked to a guy in NORTHERN Iowa darn near Minnesota, this week he hunted a spot that hadn't been coonhunted in forever and they killed five in one night around #30 Lbs and was pumped about it. I have to see it to believe that someone kills 120 coon and all are 30 pounders. Kittens up North might weigh 20lbs but no way you kill 120 and all weigh 30+! I'm calling shenanigans on this one.

How does anyone have time to kill 120 coons?

I have killed 45 this year.

did you factor in the ones he threw back or is he talking them all right now? NAFA reported that they just sold all the coon they were holding so I wouldn't doubt $14.50 avg on all GOOD coon. Groenwald is the slickest buyer in the business. If you took him 70 and he throws back 10 then you got $12.42. That's his M.O.

I'm putting mine up and sending them to NAFA. It could back fire if prices drop after the next auction but I'm tired of Groeny's games. If I sell you coon, you buy them all or none. He cherry picks the best of your lot and throws back what should be low end coon marketable coon. That's drives your average down because what he pays you on the low end for the coon he kept is what he should've paid you on the one's he threw back.

Posted by B+D Kennels on 11-24-2010 08:39 PM:

Nate i will sell all the ones i have and you can resell to groeny and make all kinds of money. lol. your only kidding yourself, everybody knows groeny doesn't pay those kind of averages.

Posted by breezyoaks on 11-24-2010 09:07 PM:

prices

I was happy with $11.50avg..........had 5 football coon in there so otherwise would be bout 2 bucks higher..........Perry had a nice a bunch a coon in that picture of him, Todd and Buck so can believe he hit 14.50 for them. I have hunted and sold coon for 36 r so years and aint never seen a 48#er as Nate shoots .......anyway, I dont believe ya can shoot those size coon up nort on a berry diet and not see em on corn down here...........whatever......
Happy Thanksgiving..............
