Competition Hunting and bench show?????

I've always just pleasure hunted and have only had one registered dog in my life. I am looking to get a papered dog and start comp hunting and maybe bench showing....... What are some things i should know and how things work at these shindigs..... i know you go out in four dog casts and get points for stricking treeing and i dunno what else..... or how the points are awarded. What goes on at a bench show? what does my dog and me gotta do? What do i need to know? What are the basic esentials i should know before goin out and lookin like a complete idiot? Thanks, CrossBreed......

Get yourself a copy of the Official UKC rulebook, and STUDY!! ALOT!! Not only will you have a better understanding of how night hunts work, other hunters will not be able to take advantage of a guy that doesnt know the rules! There are alot of good people in this sport, and there are also so low down dirty CROOKS, too. Just study that rule book, and be prepared!

Here's a link to the rules for UKC nite hunts. Read them thoroughly several times, then come back with questions on the rules that you don't understand. We love rules questions on here!

Best thing to do is look up where the next hunt is in your area and go spectate with a handler. there is usually a bench show before the hunt that you can watch and ask questions also.

learn the rules, and have a dog that is treeing and staying put. The rest will come, and its like riding a bike, you will not learn how, until you try, and when you fall, get up and try again. Most of time it is a very enjoyable time, and you'll make many many new friends along the way.

Check out the local clubs in your area, then join one . Then spectate on at least a half a dozen hunts ,Then if you are still excited about it you can then start paying for your lessons!!

Here's another link to a page that will explain how many points a dog needs to recieve to earn their title and the point value of their win.

CrossbreedCur,
Those rules are very, very, very important. Learn them. Know every word and what each rule means. Know how each rule can be applied.
I understand that it is very confusing right now, but if you want to get into the compitition part of our sport, you have to know the rules. It will start making sense to you once you have been a spectator on 5 or 6 casts, IF YOU STUDY< STUDY< AND STUDY those rules. More people get mad and/or quite comptitition hunting because they think they have been 'CHEATED'. when in most cases they did not know the rules well enough

Here are the 4 things you must have:
1. A good working knowledge of the rules,
2. A club or an individual willing to help the 'newbe',
3. A dog that is capable of winning, and
4. Thick skin and the fortitude to stay with it.
