Second Guessing Youre Dog

A few days ago I turned loose about 7:30 hoping to have a good night. The first cut went well struck and treed in about 6 minutes and found the coon with my spotlight. Re casted my female in the same woods and she was struck and treed again in about 6 minutes, fount that one with my spotlight as well. Loaded her up and turned loose somewhere that gets hunter hard. I turned her right on a track and she took it a few hundred yards in about 5 minutes and treed. She was on a large grape vine up a huge beach tree. I couldn't find it due to holes. I loaded her up and casted her somewhere else and she was struck and treed quickly. On my way in to the tree I seen the coon OR SO I thought. When I pulled out my spotlight I seen the hole coon in the next tree over and her tree was not touching the tree with the coon in it. I looked her tree over really good and came to the conclusion that she just missed it. I re casted her in there and she got treed quick again and found that one without a light (got to love no leaves). On my way back to my vehicle I glanced at the tree she had made and WHAT DO YA KNOW? There was a coon up the tree she was on and the tree beside it! I have often told myself to never second guess her because she is very accurate. On my way back I told myself I would not second guess her anymore. That didn't last long! LOL

Turned loose last night and it was a little warmer than it's been. She worked a track for about 10-12 minutes and began to tree. I walked in there with hopes on knocking her out the coon. It was a medium sized oak tree and she was on a grape vine when I got in to her. I looked and looked and looked but no coon was seen. I looked at her and was about to whip her but I did not (thankfully) I did get after her and told her to GET! I wa sgoing to make her get it right! She has not to my knowledge made a slick tree in about 2 months of hunting 3 to 5 nights a week for 4 or 5 cuts. I sat on a log at the bottom of the tree she had just made anf what do you know! I foud the coon sitting right above the grape vine! I felt bad for scolding her and guess what she did? She fell treed in there on a SLICK tree ! LOL I think she was getting me back! My point is never second guess youre dog unless it's obvious that it's wrong.

I'm the opposite.

Every track is trash until proven otherwise.

Every tree is slick or off game until proven otherwise.

They have to prove it to me every drop. They don't get rewarded unless I see the proof.

Now that don't mean I whoop them off a den tree, but they get no praise for it. I just turn them back loose.

I never give mine the benifit of the doubt.

That way I don't have to be disappointed when they do screw up LOL.

I can see that side of it. I believe for a dog to reach its full potential you have to trust it. I am as hard on my dogs as anybody! I don;t put up with much of anything! Once I have walked to a few hundred trees with coon in them i think it's time to lay off a little bit. I honestly believe she made that slick tree just to spite me for getting after her when she had that coon.

Rip, that is exactly how I feel. Some may say you are being too hard on the dog, I say, I may not find all the coon, but if he is there I will....eventually.
