Is there younger dogs that are getting ahead of him on the track. I've seen a few old dogs that had been the lead dog most of their life, and when they got older and couldn't run in the front anymore, they would sometimes get jealous and quit or not look good when they got passed by other dogs. Just a guess.

i've seen what dustin discribed. my older feist changed her hunting style when i started hunting a younger 2nd feist with her. maybe i just imagined how i might have felt if it had happened to me. like assigning a human characteristic to a dog.

Had a great bear dog that did the same exact thing! The dirty son of a gun one day he would run like the greatest dog in the world, fast, strong, great build, tree hard, fight a bear, everything you wanted in a bear dog. Then the next day...... throw him on a bear that he just watched cross the road and he would walk out about 5-10 yards, turn around and look at you. Wouldn't do a thing. He was about 4-5 years old when he started this, before then never had a problem with him. We attributed it to finally taking too many beatings from the bears. But too good of a dog to just get rid of, so we gave him to a guy that ran coon. He never had a problem with him at all, ran good for him. So i guess he found his calling? Just a thought...

Glad you brought up the point about getting whipped off I've had a couple real good dogs most of the time couldn't ask for a better dog but over time noticed if we turned loose on a mean bear they would run until the bear stopped to fight and it was all over for them and yes some dogs do get jealous when they start getting outrun
