Garmin Software Update (long post)
I have an Astro 220 receiver that is about a year and a half old (bought on EBay earlier this summer). I just bought a DC 40 to go with it. In all honesty I haven't been happy with the range on tests I have done. I have been averaging at most 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile range in relatively flat terrain (this is simply tests). I followed other posts on here and did the updates as recommended (updated both the receiver and DC 40) about 12:30 am last night. This morning on my way to church I hung the collar in my driveway and took the 220 with me. I went 2.5 miles before I lost signal! On this same exact drive yesterday I went less than half a mile before losing the signal. I thought the time of day may impacted the test (prior to the upgrade I did the test at 1:30pm) so I turned my 220 on on my way home and picked up the collar about a 1.5 miles out. I ran the same route and got the same exact results as earlier in the morning, 2.5 miles.
Point of this post is that I believe the upgrades are extremely important.
What I dont't like is that it seems as though you have to get alot closer to the collar to pick it back up once you loose signal. I fugured you could go back to where you lost it (when doing a test and collar is stationary) but I found you need to get closer. All told I am a happy Garmin owner now. I had bought the telescoping antenna to help my range but it gives me the same range as the standard rubber antenna even after the upgrade.
Sorry for the long post but I thought this may help some folks. I changed from being disappointed to being a happy Garmin owner.
I haven't done any updates with my garmin and I can do that, My uncles dog treed on one side of mountain, no roads so we drove all the way to wv side to old forest road got anywhere from 3 to 5 miles with standard ant. no lie. maybe it was cause she was higher and we was in the valley but that is what i got and it took us right to her.
