garmins ( not a fan)
I think by know everyone knows i think they suck, as of friday i will never own a piece of **** like that . me and a friend went out we turned his dog with my dog ,my dog treed his went around a lake and treed . we could not get to his dog ,we tried for about 3 hrs the dog left .so we tried to get him on his garmin and it kept saying he was 11 yards from us we looked all over couldnt find the dog. i spent all weekend looking for his dog , he came back with his garmin today and we looked again it kept saying he was in the same spot as before, he wasnt. carl got a call this afternoon someone found his dog, so i went to get him he was about 4 miles the opposite direction of what the garmin says. we put the collar in my yard and he tracked it when we got close it was still pointing in the wrong direction. i know im going to get a ear full from garmin people , but all i can say is i will never own one ever . dont care if garmin sent me one for free i would just get rid of it, it kept saying it was near this old tractor planter in the woods
Hunt with whatever tracker you want , but I'm taking the Garmin until something I like better comes along.

Doesn't sound like there is anything wrong with the unit.
It is SUPPOSED to show you the last place the dog was at when it lost signal.
It keeps the spot the dog was last tracked at in memory and it says the dog is there.
So if you have one treed then go out of range North when the unit loses the dog it will mark that spot where the dog was treed/last picked up and there will be a little question mark beside of it.
That way you can go back to where it was and possibly pick it up. This comes in really handy when the dog is underground in a tile or something. It will take you to where they went in at, where the beep beeps would just be a lost dog never to be seen again unless it was shallow enough and you stumbled close enough to get a signal.
BUT if that dog moves while you are out of range, and it doesn't come back in range then it will continue to take you to the last spot you got signal.
It is then your responsibility to try and get into range.
If the dog was 4 miles away sounds like it was out of range, you should have drove around till you picked the dog up or used the long range antenna.
Really this is no different than somebody not turning on a quick track then claiming it was junk cause it didn't pick the dog up when it was turned off.
4 miles away is out of range of any tracker around here, including ATS, Quick Track, Garmin, and Tracker.
Trying to see where it points when you are close to it only shows that it was operator error, not unit error.
You have to calibrate the compass for it to point in the right direction. It's only a flaw if it points in the wrong direction over X amount of distance away from it (30 feet or so, whatever the margin of error is) AND after calibration.
But if you use it on map you don't have to do that, it shows the dog on the map.

Most of the problems people have with garmin are operator errors. Not saying this is the case. I call it the DAO.
when we lost the dog he was a mile away , we went to that spot and couldntpick him up anymore, it kept saying it was by that old tractor, went back today and it was saying the same thing
all im saying we are not the only one with these problems, and dont really care about smart ass answers on here , kinda just trying to see or get answers about maybe what we did wrong. all i know with my other tracking system i wouldnt have ruined a whole weekend looking for this dog . maybe it was human error but there is a whole lot of people on different threads going through the same thing
sounds like to me the dog got out of range and it was showing you the last spot he was before you lost him. when you went to that spot he must have still been out of range. thats why you couldn't pick him back up. might want to invest in a long range antenna. i have the roof mount and it works great.
sometimes its hard telling what you did wrong, one time i wasnt getting signal over 200 yards, and all that was wrong was the antenna was unscrewed a little bit. It maybe something little like that, that caused it. But i sure do love my garmin.

yes it did mark it and we did drive around trying to get in range, but it kept in the same spot. he was 4 miles away when we got him back 2 days later. where we were hunting was a big section and we couldnt get close enough to get a signal i guess, all i know is carl paid big money for this dog to be running around during our first day of bow season. just trying to find answers so if it was our fault it doesnt happen again. this is the first time he couldnt find his dog. it seams that the garmin works better if the dogs are closer to you. when they get far out thats when it seams to have problems
glay 57
i hope this doesnt ever happen again ,its been a long weekend trying to get this dog back safe , a young 5 year old caught him . what gets me is today in the back yard we set the collar out back and it wasnt even pointing at the collar
Well I'll see if I can help you understand how they work a little since you are looking for answers.
GPS tech is only going to be accurate to so close, my old hand held was about 30 feet, seems like it might be better than that with the garmin.
That's why you can't use the arrow when you are real close. You have to use the map and watch yourself move closer to the dog (you are the white arrow). Within 30 feet or so, whatever the margin of error is, the arrow can point in any direction and it not be a malfunction because it is within that range. Kind of like with the beep beep being so close it bleeds across and doesn't give you an exact direction. Again it's not a malfunction for the arrow not to point to the collar if you are close or if you haven't calibrated the compass. That's not how GPS works. You have to calibrate it, and within 30 feet is fine, it doesn't matter if it points right to it. IT WILL give you an accurate measurement on the map, and the cool thing is if it is off 30 feet, but you use the map it will show you 30 feet off in the same direction so you take the error out of it by making your symbol meet up with the dogs symbol. That's how you use a Garmin at close range, not with the arrows.
It does sound like he was out of range and it was marking the last spot you picked him up at which is what it is supposed to do. When this happens you go to that spot and see if you can pick him up, look for things he can be inside right there (tile or something like that). If you look on the map and walk to where your icon gets on top of the dog you should be within about 30 feet or even less. Look for something the dog can be under etc.
If that's not the case it means the dog is out of range or the collar got turned off etc.
Then you should use the long range antenna and try and pick the dog back up.
If you want to use the arrow to track then you have to calibrate the compass every time you turn the unit on because it's an electronic compass not magnetic.
That's why I always use the map instead of the arrow/compass.
If you use a Garmin you have to realize it's limitations. With the rubber antenna that is going to be anywhere from 500 yards to a mile or so depending on conditions and terrain. Then you have to get the long range antenna out, it will pick up a mile consistantly and sometimes 1.5 to 2 around here when conditions are right. It's not a directional antenna, if it picks the dog up for a split second it will show it to you on the map, which is great. Then it will show that spot and you can drive/walk to it and get closer to him even when if you can't pick him up all the way there.
I would definately invest in the roof mount antenna to get the full benifit of the Garmin if I were your buddy.

you answered a lot of questions i had asked. the bad part is he does have a long range antenna in his box we just didnt know what to do when it kept pointing to the one spot, well i feel a little better now . i guess you really need to know exactly how to use the garmin thank you for explaining.
Rip is right, run both until you learn Garmin Jamie (dick)

Clear the track history, and recalibrate the compass. It tells you in the manual to clear the track history.. If your dog huts deep it don't take a long time to fill up the history. My buddies was pointing about 1/4 of the compass in the other direction from mine last night. He calibrated the compass and it was dead on. Hope this helps you out.

Ok i've got a question not saying i don't like the Garmin or anything but ive got a good question. I bought a DC-40 collar at AO and it will pick up great on everyone else's handheld but mine. But the strange part i can pick up anyone else's collars including the 40's with my handheld. I have no idea what the problem is i even called the gentleman i bought it from and he had never heard of it which he is sending me another but i just wondered if anyone else had ever heard of that. i even went as far as changing the id number on every collar i've got just to make sure of no interferance.
