Dogs fighting at tree

Went hunting Tuesday night my BT struck ran track about 600 yards and treed before I could get to him the dog that was hunting with us jumped on him at the tree mauled up his ear my dog came back and met me at about 300 yards and jumped him one more time with me trying to leash him. He is about 2 years old.My question is there any to get him to hold the tree no matter what. This was a comp hunt just a buddy hunt.

Posted by Tailkicker on 10-01-2010 02:10 AM:

with that kind of compnay it may ruin him..

with that kind of action he would ahve to fight back.. and that would get u scratched in comp

I would think if he treed with a real gator leaving would be best. If the dog came 200 yards off the tree to chew on him some more I`d say that dog needs a bullet! Only way a dog will stay with that is to fight but that will cause you more problems than it`s worth.

True he will not be hunting with that dog anymore. The dog we were hunting with is a X comp dog that is about 6 years old.Guss he was mad that Caution ran and treed ahead of him he was really hammering the tree till the fight broke out.

A lot of that has to do with what is in their genetics. Some dogs can take heat under the tree and others will leave. I don't care to have a dog fight for any reason but sometimes it would be nice in competition to have a dog that has enough grit to stay.

Go to local shelter and pick up a pit bull. Put a cut vest on him and call your buddy to go hunting. The dog will know more about what to do with your buddy's dog than than he does.lol

In my opinion the only way a dog can stay at the tree with another dog attacking him is if he fights back and then there will another alligator that shouldn't be entered in hunts.

IMO there is nothing wrong with your dog. He seems to be pretty smart I would say. Now you may need to find someone else to hunt with but nothing your dog can do about that.

If he's a tree dog he will find a way to stay, and just get out of the way, or he he can't take it he better find his own Tree some place else. Don't come back to me for help. JMO

I don't expect my dog to stay treed with a fighter. I don't expect my dog to fight back. I do expect the judge to scratch the fighter. If he won't, I will. I have no problem taking a cast back to the MOH because the judge won't make the call. And I do expect my dog to stay put without reguard to face barking or blowing. I've had darn good dogs that wouldn't stay with a dog that blows. Somebody else owns them now. But I won't ask my dog to stay with a fighter.

Will I am sorry I didn't mean stay and get your but kicked, but just be smart about it, stay away from him and look else where is needed. Your right about going back to MOH

The thing is if someone is pounding on you what are you gonna do, I got to think your gonna fight back a little, but we ask these dogs not to stand up for them selves and turn your back and put your tail between legs and head home.

Then IMO i I think a lot of these dogs that are face barkers are really "Fear barkers" because they have been in this sitation before

Comparing dogs to people is ridiculous.

Over time, a dog basicly has 2 options, get rough or get out.

If that other dog chased him 300 yards off the tree to jump him again it would seem to me your dog would have to fight to even stay in the same woods. Much of that and yours will either not hunt OR be a fighter that nobody wants.

Nasty....?

If Im going to be nasty you will know it, that isnt even close.

All Im saying is that comparing dogs to people is about as far out as it can get.... Dogs dont have pride and ego.

Yes, in a discussion of dog behavior, that one is perfectly ridiculous.
Dogs don't reason these things out. They only have two reactions to danger or aggression, fight or flight. The rules disqualify them for fighting in all instances unless you can see the fight start witch is the least likely thing to happen. So all the rules allow them to do is flee. Some dogs will move away to the other side of the tree, back off and tree away from the tree or just take itand keep treeing. But almost no one can train that and I'm not asking that of my dog. I'll take my minus and let the rules get rid of the rough dog.

You say dogs have only two actions fight or flight, but then you gone on and say that they can get back or move around and stay. So I hear from you they can determine something besides fighting or flight. Smart dogs can learn to stay out of trouble and still get the job done. We will never agree on this so lets and go on.

"Comparing dogs to people is ridiculous"? Why do you think that they fight on a tree? Pride, envy, competitive nature, jeolousy, laziness are all traits found in dogs.

I would like to think most human beings can reason a little better than animals, I realize some cant or wont, but putting those that can in the same catagory with animals is indeed rediculous.

Posted by Richard Lambert on 10-02-2010 02:50 PM:

"Reasoning" is not a personality trait. I agree that most humans can reason better than dogs. But dogs do have the same personality traits as humans. They love and they hate. They can get depressed. They have good moods and bad moods or "good days and bad days". Some nights they are truly focused on the task at hand and some nights they just don't care. And dogs do have inteligence and can learn. Of course, some dogs are a lot smarter than others and learn a lot faster. But in order to teach a dog life's lessons, such as, you can't fight at a tree; you have to be smarter than the dog. You also have to know your dog and his type of personality.

personally, i dont want my dog to be mean, that just causes problems when pleasure hunting, i would have just caught my dog and left that guy and went home, or hunt by myself, there is no need for a mean dog

Where you live. I have one that you can borrow to hunt with him. She want leave!

huh.

not that anyone cares, but my opinion (and its just that) is that mean dogs, or dogs that regularily start fights should be banned. And owners that intentionally hunt them at nite hunts should be fined and banned. In my mind there is absolutely no reason to allow them to ruin someone elses dog.
