UKC World Show

I was really disappointed in the way the the ring looked this year at the world show. There was no matting that was put down on the concrete. The dogs were slipping on the concrete when they turned the corner. The matting is really nice, because this takes away the chance of a dog getting hurt, like slipping on concrete. I hope that next year there will be matting down if they have the show on concrete again. What happened to the nice fencing that used to go around the ring. The world this year just seemed like a club show.

at least we didnt get sawdust.i like the outside best in the grass.
i heard they had pooper scopper and mop

i seen 8-10 people run around the ring with cowboy boots on
mine didnt have no problem i guess he is use to these limestone
creek beds with moss on them maybe some pine tar on its feet
like the baseball players use might help.i dont know sawdust
and mold might kill me of course i wouldnt have to give it a bath.

Natalie, I was also kind of disappointed in the way the ring was set up this year as well. It was my first year attending the World Show and I guess I kind of expected something a little more flashy. lol. Also noticed a few dogs slipping when they turned the corner and it did somewhat take away from their fluent motion going around the ring.

That ring was not slippery. It is nothing like the slick surface in Richmond which is the only surface that we use matts for. That flooring in C City is no different than Albany and we've never had a complaint about that?

OK, you want more ring decorations. I understand that and we'll see what we can do in that regard. I just thought we needed a defined area that created a "ring". Which we had but....

I've been to 22 World Shows and that was easily in the top 1/2 or 1/3 for being one of the nicer rings to show in that we've had.

Now we know why they are show dogs and not hunting dogs. If they can get hurt walking on concrete, for God's sakes keep them out of the woods, they wouldn't last a night.

im not trying to ruffle anyone's feathers or make anyone mad, but seriously some people just cant be happy with what they have/get

i dont show professionally or anything, but in my opinion why even worry about the decorations or flowers?

you are there to look at the dogs not the scenery right? i think for the people watching trying to look through all the latice and flowers and haybales and cornstalks and stuff just trying to get a glimpse of the dogs is more of a hinderance and worse than just being able to stand there and look at the dog

and as far as the dogs slipping, maybe if ya'll didn't cut their toenails back to the quicks maybe they'd have something to grab a little traction with. dogs cant hunt without toenails so i dont think they should have to show without them either

hey todd, my coon dog doesnt like the way the stud barns look....do you think next year you could bring some pretty flowers in there for him to pee on...er...i mean look at?

that's all those dogs see those pretty flower pots for is a pi$$ing post anyway! lol.

i say ukc decorate it however you see fit, if someone dont like it or think its not flashy enough, they know where wal-mart is

besides, were you worried about how the ring looked as you were trotting around it or did you worry about how your dog looked?

I think I know what Natalie is getting at but at the same time I can't put my finger exactly on what it was. It was more of feeling that something was missing . The show went well with the dogs called in an orderly fashion and everything was in place but at the same time that " feeling " of this is the "World Show" just wasn't quite there. Really wish I could step up and say what it was but I can't.

On a side note I had afew first timers comment to me that they thought it would be bigger in general with more people and dogs and venders. I think they were thinking like AO's . Many fail to realize the HUNT is almost over by Sat.. I've always felt a little bad that there couldn't be more people on hand to congratulate the Final 4 when they come in from that last cast.

Posted by JiM on 09-28-2010 02:45 PM:

You're right that the World event is not as big as any of UKC's other premier events, not even as big as a breed day event. On Friday you have a total of 26 dogs max plus the Slam event which didn't draw squat this year. Saturday it is down to 4 dogs plus the show and Slam. Really not nearly enough to attract a bunch of vendors or spectators. Keep in mind that spectators are not even allowed on casts which leaves out most of the wives and kids from going out and listening at the truck. The World events are more about the business of winning the biggest prize in the sport.....without much window dressing.

LOL, I wasn't complaining at all. I've been to my fair share of the bigger Purina Hunts and the two dogs that I showed at the World are primarily hunting dogs, the female is a NITECH. Neither of them slipped on the floor, nor was I worried about them being hurt if they did. I just thought that it took away from the dogs' gait a little bit for the ones that were sliding around. I wasn't expecting a big crowd of people and I fully understand the importance of this event. It's a great honor!! That's the only reason I expected a little something more when it came to the setup of the ring.

this was my first world also. i know what you mean danielle, i guess being the world championship i was expecting it to be nicer then a.o., and just as big. but dale is right in how he explained it. i do see both points on the floor as i did see some dogs slipping, i think some just arent exposed to the indoor venues, with most local shows being out side. we also showed a plott hunting dog!!! myself i had a good time and will be coming back next year.

Natalie Has been in the winners circle her entire life. I remember watching her show when she was a kid and she was always a class act. So here is my opinion. Instead of criticizing her professional observations, How about taking notes to improve the atmosphere of what should be considered a prestigious show ring? I know it is not the Westminster (I think thats how you spell it) but for show enthusiast it should be tweaked to as close to perfection as possible!!!

Exactly right, and for caring enough to comment on it you get the " public relations guy "

most of us prefer the people and atmosphere of the hunts versus the Westminster type shows and do it because we enjoy hounds and work hard at what it takes to win just as everybody in the hunts does. You get lucky just once in awhile in the hunts and the shows but the rest of the time those consistent winners earn it with dedication and hard work and that's why you see many of the same ones winning.

First, we did not attend this years event,,, did not even try to qualify to go. (cutting back on travel)

But remember these are hunting dogs most of which are housed outdoors and their only time indoors is the VETs office. So as a general rule if it's not a natural surface such as dirt or grass then they should use some form of mat or carpet. I will say the floor at Albany is bad. Just my thoughts on the floor. As for decorations,,, well my males love to pee on them so I could do without LOL.

Not meant to offend anyone just a suggestion!

I wasn't there, just to far for me to travel anymore. Cost to much.
Just having knee surgery 2 1/2 mos. ago didn't help.
I think having it that far off center hurt the turn out.
I realize there is lota of hounds in that far n.e. but I believe it was to far for people that drive to show. I believe the hunt would have been better attended at zones if the finals had been more in center.
I didn't try to qualify Kidd or Roxie because of my knee, and not knowing if it was going to be ready or not and I sure don't want that surgery again. I wasn't going to drive that far just to show 2 or 3 dogs world or no world.
