bench showing hounds

i am basically new to the bench show world and never in my life would i have thought it would take as much patients and self controll as it has. i decided to start showing in hope of someday having a dual purpose hound. it didnt take long to realize that it is almost easier to train one to run and tree! i have been fooling with this pup for 2 months and he has just turned 6 months old. he will stand still but still wants to be difficult from time to time. I thought about carring him to a local show this weekend but wanted some live judges to give me their opinion first. so here he is...

Well he is looking great! He has good feet, color and looks like you have done a great job bench breaking him. Taylor would be so jealous.....her male (Hot Rod) is not nearly as broke as yours. They look just alike though. So glad you are happy with him. Please keep me posted on his progress both in the wood and on the wood. Good luck if you go to the show this weeked. Maybe you should make sure to keep him open until Grand American and show him there. He would be still in the puppy class but just barely and should make a good showing. Just a thought........

She is a great judge and a very nice lady.
She's also a Nut and always seems to have a way of making even the smallest show fun. Her energy and personality are contagious . If she is the judge its a good one to go to for a first show. When i was first starting out most of the judges made me so nervous, even if there were only 3 dogs LOL, not her though.

-trim the nails
-cant tell by the pic, but if the bench is leaning downhill, set him up facing down hill...that will force him to get on his toes.
-when you set the legs/feet, pinch the toes together, that will help getting a good foundation
-it looks like the front leg on this side needs to come back under him a bit.
- make sure that he's square, side to side, front to back - dont forget to walk around dog and look from front/back
-can set the back legs slightly wider than front (so you can just barely see the front legs when viewed from behind).

good luck. you'll get better with time.
