What Was It?

Last night while hunting we treed and when we got there on the ground around the tree was a pile of small light green almost yellow fruit like things. I picked one up and noticed the sweet smell right away, it was soft when i squished it and had a very sweet smell, there were more coons sitting up over this patch. The fruit was just about half the size of a chicken egg, I`ve never seen they before and this was the first time I`ve ever hunted this bush. Also the fruit were growing from a vine on the ground not dropped from the tree.

Yes, I couldn`t figure out what they were. Never seen them before! Even the local land stweardship guy has no idea. Do coons eat them? When the dogs got treed there were 7 coons sitting up over this patch.

Coons will eat them but possums like them even better than coons. Surprised there were no possums there.

Around here paw paws grow on a small tree, not a vine. The trees are usually only 10 - 15 feet high with big leaves. They are a pale yellow with large seeds.
