Trained dogs.
Do you guys like to train your own or buy one already trained.I just got into the sport a couple of years ago.I have tried my hands at training and will admit im not that good at it.So maybe its time for me to save my bucks and buy a dog that is already going good.Just wanted to no what you guys did.
It seems to me, some people cant train a hound to save their souls.....I have no idea why.
I know several guys that are top handelers that have never successfully trained a hound.
At least your smart enough to admit which catagory you fit, and go from there.
Josh my biggest problem is i have fibromalagya.Sorry if misspelled. If you guys dont no what that is well some days ever bone in your body is stiff and sore. Its kind of hard to take a pup out hunting every night and get stiff and sore and then have to work the next day.O well thats the breaks i guess and i just keep plugging along the best i can.
Well, I didn't chose either because...
Out of all the dogs that we have had, we have trained 5 of them, 4 we have bought
Copper-we trained
Majestic-Quincy traded a fishing pole for her
Rocky-we bought as a puppy and trained
Bull-we trained
Charlie-we started him running and treeing then they guy that owned him sold him. 3 years later we bought him.
Molly-we bought
Hank-we bought
Big Girl--we raised and trained
If you can find a dog that suits you, and you have the $$$ to buy it, I say buy it. It's your money that you're spending.
As long as your happy, what else matters?
Richy, have you thought about buying a puppy, and paying someone to train it for you? That is another option.

had hounds thirty years . bought one trained, one started.. coonhound... 2 beagles.. .. a foxhound a couple coyote hounds. training hounds is kind of a misleading term... i teach them to handle a little and what i dont want them running... the rest is almost all instinct.. pete
Right on Pete

Pete has it right. You can make a dog stop doing something you don't want him to, but you can't very well teach him to do something it isn't bred in him to do.
Teach them to handle, break them from running off game, avoid letting them learn bad habits, and keep exposing them to game, and let nature take its course.
That's training.

I own 4 right now and all 4 came here at 7 weeks of age. 90% of training is time spent. That is where most come up short.
There's a third option missing - send your own dogs OFF to be started, then finish them yourselves.

I agree with Pete and Jim.
Richy,
You might consider buying a pup from Dave Haugh. He's in your area isn't he? They are naturals and I just don't see where a guy could go wrong with one of his! You'd have to get on his long waiting list though,as most of his are sold even before they are born.
A word of caution. If you are going to buy a dog that is suppose to be doing it already, hunt with it and make sure of what your spending your $$ on.

Im with Pete and Jim also
Maby when that right pup comes along for you, you'll realize just keeping it out of trouble or bad situations that can mess it up is about all you can really do other than teaching it to handle and not run off game. If I have to teach a dog to hate a coon or to tree and track, I dont want it....

I've sent seraveral pups to training pens (usualy 8 months or more) when I end up not having the time to start them in the woods. The success depends on the pup. All a coon pen does is expose the pup to coons with out the distractions of deer, fox, etc. It is not a wonder maker, it only alows a pup to be introduced to hunting.
Don't send a pup that won't handle or you are going to be paying the pen operator to teach them to handle before he can release them in the pen.
I would send another if I needed to, although I start most of my pups myself.
Gonzo.Your right Dave is in my area and i would consider him a friend.I have already got one pup from him and well lets just say.Well i will give him one more hunting season.
rich
did you buy the training video with the pup

I PAID 250.00 FOR AN 9 YEAR FEMALE THAT WAS A PRETTY FAIR COONDOG. MOST OF ALL SHE WAS STRAIGHT. I USE HER TO CHECK MY YOUNG DOG WITH. I DO NOT WANT TO BUY AN ALREADY TRAINED HOUND.I DONT HUNT JUST TO SEE HOW MANY COON I CAN KILL IN A NIGHT. I HUNT TO HEAR MY YOUNG DOG GET FIRST STRIKE, BE A GOOD TRACK DOG, AND SLAM THAT TREE FIRST. AND TO KNOW I HAD A HAND IN IT. WINNING A NITE HUNT WITH A DOG THAT SOMEONE ELSE HAS TRAINED ISNT WHAT I WANT EITHER. NOT ALL DOGS ARE GONNA MAKE IT JUST ISNT IN THEM. I PUT A LOT OF TIME IN AT HOME WITH MY DOGS BEFORE THEY EVER GO TO THE WOODS. THERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU CANT TRAIN A DOG TO DO. IT HAS TO BE BRED INTO THEM. AS I SAID IT IS IN THE BLOODLINES. BUT SOME HABITS ARE MAN MADE. WHAT I WANT TO SAY IS GET INTO THOSE WOODS ON A OLD LOGGING ROAD AND TURN EM LOOSE AND HEAR YOUR YOUNG HOUND GO HUNTING AND DOING FOR YOU BECAUSE THATS WHAT HES BRED TO DO AND TO KNOW YOU HAD A HAND IN HELPING HIM ALONG. CANT YOU HEAR THOSE HOUNDS BUSTING THAT SWAMP WIDE OPEN AND THEY ARE PUTTING THE HEAT ON HIM NOW AND SOUNDS LIKE THEY ARE GONNA TREE. WELL THE GATORS AND SNAKES HAD BETTER MOVE OVER BECAUSE IM COMING TO YOU OLE BOY. CANT YOU HEAR THAT SWAMP MUSIC? AND I TRAIN? THIS YOUNG HOUND. TONITE HE COULD BE A WOULD CHAMP? AND YOU HAD A HAND IN ALL THIS.
