Never ever , ever , ever , ever , ever .... EVER!!! shoot something out to your dogs you dont' want them to tree ... they cannot understand why you would want the possum then punish them for it ... it's beyond what a dog understands...

Never ... ever ... think that a dog is so stupid that he don't catch on to you slammin on the breaks to dump him onto a road possum and then shock him ... if you think that is gonna work ... the dog needs to be up front and you should be riding in the dog box ...

If he is smart enough to know that breaks are being applied as your saying then he is smart enough to know that slick tails soaked in ammonia is something he should not mess with!Just my opinion.

Being smarter than the dog is something the old timers say over and over for a reason .... you wouldn't put a twinkie in your kids mouth and then slap it out as way of getting them to lose weight would you ? .... never mind .. based on your first response maybe you think that does make sense...

"there" refers to a place ... '' their' is the word you were looking for ... before you talk about intelligence .. you might want to go get some ..

The proof that some dogs are smarter than their owners is when their owner has a dumb idea about possum breaking that doesn't work ... but the dog is smart enough to overlook it and quit treeing them anyway ....

So when you are talking about slamming on the brakes, then by your logic, I could not drive past a deer and slam on my brakes, dump the dog, and break him that way, right?
Well, I had a young dog that decided he really liked deer. It took only three times of driving around and finding deer to turn him on and then let him get a good lesson before he was broke from deer. Only three times! So yes, that method works. I have done it several times. This is only one example!

my dog used to catch them on the ground and i would take it away from and walk him down a little bit and recast him and then go stand by the slick tail and if he came back i would scold him

Posted by EnglishBabe on 08-11-2010 04:29 AM:

Never really found a tried and true method of breaking them off of them. I tried the Boatman over kill method, the tie it to their collar and let it wear off method, the shock them when they grab it method and still had a female Bluetick that was one he!! of a possum dog, but no coondog!

My male dog is sneaky about them now, he will run around a tree they are in, but never open up on it. He will also kill one if he finds it in a field, but unless you are close enough to hear him growling, you will never know, unless you find it stretched out dead.

I think that different methods work for different dogs. It all depends on how hard headed they are and if they are 'open' to learning a lesson or not.

I have seen this method tried once. Flys invaded the possum and maggots got inside the dogs neck and it cost the man alot of $$$ to get him well. So i would not suggest doing it.

lol i love it. we try to give some ideas and let the guy choose the method he likes and somebody who has no ideas wants to cut us all down. i hope i spelled that all right

Posted by Bluedogman on 08-11-2010 12:18 PM:

I never had one that it took any more than a little scolding and a slap with the hand to break.
