Hound movies and books
I was just wondering what everyones favourite hound/dog movies or books were. I just watched ol Yeller again and it got me to thinking about hound/dog movies and books. I know of the standards Red Fern, Ol Yeller...etc i was wondering what other ones there were
Pepper
Hound Dog Man
The same fellow who wrote Old Yeller, Fred P. Gipson, also wrote a book called Hound Dog Man which I have a copy of in my library. I personally liked it as well as I liked Old Yeller. I think they made a movie of it and I would sure like a copy for my video library. My favorite video is of the Twilite Zone episode of the Old Man and his coondog going to heaven. I have seen grown men with a lump in their throat after seeing that one.

Definately a top ten pick for me.
I saw this for the first time just a few weeks ago.
It's an instant favorite.

And I like these books:
The Coonhunters Handbook by Leon Whitney and Acil Underwood
Walk with Wick by who else?
There was a small booklet called The Competition Coonhunter.
I can't remember who wrote it, but I remember it as being pretty good too.

The competition hound was written by Sid Stewart, is that the one you're talking about Bruce?
Bugle Ann was a good one too.
Never did see the twilight zone episode, anybody got it on tape?

"Where the Red Fern Grows" though I like the book more than the movie. Rumor is that they're making a new version of the movie.

It's not just a rumor
They did make a new version of "Where the Red Fern Grows". It's finished, but I can't remember what the hold up is on the release. A dog named Baron owned by Jeff Green in OR or WA ended up being the "star" I'm told. I don't know what his bloodlines are.

anoyher favorite of mine is a 1940 movie called " the biscuit eater" about a pair of boys and a birddog that was supposed to be culled and they made him a top dog.

I saw one at the ...
video store the other day with a kid and a bluetick hound on the cover. I think it was a Disney movie and I dont know but I think Sounder was the name of it. Anyone seen this or know anything about it? Not sure if its necessarily all about hunting or not but thought the next time I'm at the video store I may get it anyways. I mean if its Disney, how bad can it be?
The Sounder cover you saw with the Bluetick on the cover is a new version of the movie released about a month ago. The boy that starred in the first version produced and I think directed the second version. The movie has a few minutes of coon hunting in it but that is not what the plot is about. In the original Sounder movie, the dog wasn't a bluetick. Disney changed all the Sounder book covers to the DVD box cover with the bluetick.
The same guy that wrote Sounder also wrote The Mills of God. It has a bluetick named Rowdy in it.
The movie Savage Sam had a bluetick in it. It is considered the sequel to Old Yeller. Sam is supposed to be the offspring of Old Yeller. The same kids that starred in Old Yeller are in this one as well.
Another good dog movie that doesn't have a hound it is Biscuit Eater. I believe it is a disney movie as well.
