Question

For those that run there dogs on bear. Have your dogs ever treed up and when you get to the tree you can't find anything in the tree but there is a big hole in it or the tree is rotten right up through the middle? Question is do you think there is a bear in it or has anyone seen one come out of a hole in a tree when your dogs were treeing.

They probably ran a coon, I'm sure it happens to everyone that bear hunts at some time or another.

Have seen this happen twice. The first time it happened, we saw the bear that the dogs were running. A few minutes later they pulled up treed, so we went to the tree and when we got there, nothing. Big oak tree with no leaves, but a hole in the side of it about as big as a basketball twenty feet up. When we had seen the bear earlier we guessed it to weight about 150 and thought no way could that bear gotten into that hole. We checked in the snow around the tree and found no bear track leaving only the track coming in. As we were sitting there wondering what to do we saw steam (breathe) coming out of the hole. Got a stick and beat on the tree and took pictures of a 175 pound bear as it came out of the hole. It was pretty amazing to see how she did it.
The other time the hole was in the bottom of the tree and was able to lie down and get my head and shoulders in the hole with a light and saw the bear about ten feet up just stuck up in there.
Will try to get some pictures on here next week when I get back to work.

a hole the size of a basket ball a 300lb bear could fit bears den in trees all the time with yhe hounds you have ill bet that there was a bear in there

i treed in a dead tree that only went about 20ft up with top out of it an it was hollow.. was like what in the world got to lookin the tree over an it was tore all to hell with claw marks all way up an down it used pretty regular... dogs were raisin hell i know it was in there but have no proof just know my dogs werent lyin..

I know bears can hibernate in trees i have seen pic of that. I heard if a bear can get its head in the rest of him will go in.

great pic spud. i have seen 2 bear come out a whole about the same size one round 250 other was 115 or so sow an yearling come out of a hole about that big!! bear r amazin creatures if they can get there head in the hole they can get whole body in it! awesome job with the camera!

After 35 years I still get excited when my ole hide grinders get lucky and put one up. Most of the time the camera's in my backpack and I forget about even having it. This is one of the few times I was in the right place at the right time, with the camera in hand.
