rolling in dead things

why do they do this all my hounds do this i cant think of why

I don't know if this is true or not, but I once read that they do this to help camoflage their scent when hunting. Supposedly it's an instinct that goes back in their ancestry to when they had to hunt and kill animals to survive. Is that why? I don't know, but makes as much sense as anything else I guess.
