coon and bobcat training ?

i have a young bluetick i would like to run coon and bobcat with. i just wanted to now what would be the best way to start him. should i train him on coon and then start him on cats or can i do both at the same time. like working him on coon and cat scented drags. thanks

You sure you want to put him on both coons and cats? Ain't much fun following a dog all night after a cat when you're hoping to tree coon. Just a thought...see what others have to say. Good luck.

I hunt both with my blues. I do think that it is much easier to catch coons and prefer to start my dogs on them. Bobcats will test your dogs and let you know kind of dogs you are feeding. I feel that the secret to catching bobcats is to keep a lot of pressure on him and tire him/her out and this is difficult in some terrain such as broken country or cut overs.
A bobcat is notorious for ducking and dodging and making it difficult for the dogs to make a long sustained run on him. In my country, if I can jump a cat and run him for 30 minutes with very few looses, I can catch him. The best dogs for cats are those that swing out and find the track when a loose is made.
I don't have a problem of the cat jumping out of a tree very often as the cat is so exhausted that he does not want back on the ground with 4 or 5 bellering hounds. And I live in West Texas where the trees are pretty short.
I do have a problem of dogs climbing and jumping the cat out.

i have ran bobs trying to coon hunt.... they jump out when you get about 100 yards from them....

Bobcat & Coon...

Run them on both for the first season and then when they have a little confidence, don't let them run cats at night or coon in the day. You'll get a lot of opinions from folks in the Southeast but many of those folks don't cat hunt in the daytime because they don't typically have much snow (if ever). WI is much like main in it's climate. That's how most folks do it here. No offense to the folks in the Southeast.
