7 month old pup question

I have a 7 month old male pup. He is doing really well right now. He'll run a track and tree, but has been leaving the tree (if hunted by himself). If another dog tree's with him he wont leave. Well last night we took him out hunting by himself and he struck and sounded treed a good ways a way so we drove a little ways to see if we could get closer. Well we didn't hear him so we went back to where we started and there he was, he was afraid we left him when he heard the sound of the truck. (he is only 7 months old, only took him out 5 times, each time treed a coon by himself too, haven't been able to shoot one down yet though, stupid leaves on trees) now it almost seems like he is afraid we'll leave him again. He'll still hunt (we tried a different spot) but it took him a bit to leave our side. (We did hunt for like 4 hours, afraid he was losing interest too as he is young) I'm afraid we might of screwed up leaving in the truck to try and get closer and he has never been shot a coon down yet. We were thinking of entering him in a night hunt tonight, being that he trees well with another dog supporting him. (he'll tree on his own but tree's really hard when another dog supports him, has had a coon every time too) I was just wondering opinions on entering him into his first night hunt tonight. I think it would be a good experience for him. Also, he is missing a paw and I still wanted to show him but know that will count against him. Just wondered peoples thoughts on this. He is of bad to the bones Cane breeding and grimes hill top Warrior (that goes back to DJ Drummer)

In no way would I think about putting him in a nite hunt at this age!!!!!!

As for him leaving the tree after treeing for a few mins,I'd try to stay close enough to him when he's working a track that it wouldn't take me that long to get to him. I'm not talking about trying to make every step he makes but I would stay pretty close to him if I could.

i tried staying close but man did he take off, like really take off on a good track. I just thought it would be a good experience for him (even though i know he'll lose)

Posted by HOBO on 06-25-2010 06:57 PM:

There is a slim chance it would be a good experience for him and maybe even win the cast. BUT the odds are it would be a BAD experince for him. He might be exposed to a trashy dog or worse yet an ill dog. I'd wait till he was older and more mature before I through him to the wolves.

Ok, I gotta ask! If he's treed 5 times and had the coon every time, how are the leaves affecting you being able to shoot one out to him????????

I'm kinda confused about the paw thing too. Is a stub? I lost half my thumb I got a knubb lol. Anyway I wouldn't do the night hunt thing yet because of ill dogs. But a bench show why not.

Well said, this pup has lots of "issues" that need to be addressed before he even needs to get close to a nite hunt. Tom

LISTEN TO WHAT HOBO SAID!!!!! A friend had a fine young hound that was NtCh at 10 months old with 3 wins towards Gr at 14 months old. He went completely upside down. He got REAL bad about fighting at the tree and was struggling on a lot of his tracks. We're hoping he's not ruined. My friend has him isolated at the house and is leaving him there 'till hide season comes in. We both feel the early exposure to fighting, junking and whatever other habits a lot of dogs have was too much exposure at that early an age. Let him be a pup, keep hunting him. His confidence will come back with age and exposure to the woods. Just enjoy watching him grow!!

He did well. Two dogs stood at the trucks while my little pup was the only one out hunting. He did a good job. Close call but did not win

Posted by Huntaholic on 06-27-2010 02:20 PM:

Why dont you take that rifle away from him and shoot it out!? Ive seen a LOT of women that could outshoot men! If I want one out I will shoot a box of shells and climb the tree if I have to! When a dog needs some fur in his mouth hes gonna get it one way or another around me!

Stupid

Some people just don't realize the problems problems problems starting a pup in hunts to young can cause. It takes a special hound to track, tree and hold pressure and split with out issues in a hunt and repeat the process over and over to win. I'm not saying that there are not pups out there that can't do this I'm just saying it only takes one bad expierence to turn a good young hound the other way. Its stupid to push a young hound into a situation that has real promise. If you want a good hound someday that really has the drive let he or she be a pup first and let each situation teach it something so when a particular hunting situation occurs that hound will remember what he or she has learned through time and time of expierences. A young dogs mind is a sponge and bad expierences are very hard to forget. Single your young hound out and stay close and praise for its efforts, I know staying close can be tough with a young hound but rest assured after repeated trees most hounds with turn the corner and off you go...... Good Luck
