how to make a young dog hunt deeper

is there any way to get a young dog to go deeper by its self? just looking for ideas, i know it is probly a lost cause, just looking for new ideas.

hunt it with dogs that hunt deep.

its in there dna you can make him stand somewhere other than where you are but hunting desire to catch they are born with and other than hunting them with hard going dogs you still will see what you got when there alone!!!!!!

by itself turn loose on feeders, first only a little ways, then just keep turning loose farther and farther away. start at 200 yrds or closer if needed and just keep moving backwards after a few lessons.

depends a lot on age,size of dog takes a big dog longer
to develop

I've tried it all, hunt is inherited trait, save yourself some pain and aggravation and find a bloodline that throws the hunt in them pups.

Deep hunting dogs are a pain in the azz and wayyy over-rated. If you are in an area that needs that type of dog then it sucks to be you. I'm good with a 1000 yarder. Most times they find what they need within 500-600 yards or less, where that takes them is another story. In my opinion, the dog will go farther correspondingly with its confidence. Be careful forcing a young dog to do something that it is not yet mentally prepared to do. Some dogs need patience and not a kick in the ribs. They can only give you what is in thier genes, its upto you to maximize that potential. Understand what YOUR dog is capable of, not the "look at me" stories posted on here by the gut-stomp, shock the hell out-of-em guys.

if you hunt a dog for several months bt its self they will usually end up hunting deep enough

Hunting desire is inherited, but 'how deep' can be trained into a dog.
1. Hunt him with a dog that will go deep. Young dogs like to team up. It builds their confidence.
2. Hunt him in familar hunting areas. Keep him 'knowing' where a feeder is or where a creek is. Then turn loose farther and farther from the familar area. He will go to where he knows.
3. When he gets to hunting good by himself, walk very slow. Let him range out in front of you. Don't let him think you are always right behind him. Turn your light out as much as you can. He don't need to see your light coming behind him.
4. Only shoot out coons that he has had to work 'hard' for. Reward him with coons that he has went deep or tracked hard to tree. When he trees layup coons, close to you, just pet him and go on.
5. Hunt in areas where the coon population is low. Make him have to go look for a coon.

A smart, confident dog will learn to hunt as deep as needed to tree coons.

I have one place that I hunt that is on a creek. My dogs have learned to hunt that creek very well. But about a mile down the creek is a big pecan bottom. All of my dogs have learned, if they don't strike quickly on the creek, they will pick up and be gone to the big bottom. Sometimes even cutting across to go to "THAT SPOT'. Even my year old will go there by himself.

I loose intrest in a dog real quick that knows what is should be doing but dosent have the desire to do it.

I don't think you can make a dog go hunting, They've got to have that desire.

Like I said at the beginning of my earlier post:

I really get upset at young dogs that don't have the heart to stay in a hard race. I want my young dogs to have a solid iron will to go a much as needed.

But, all that is different than 'how deep a dog hunts' !!!

I got rid of one awhile back because she would not hunt deep enough..Best young prospect I'd had in years...Old dogs could not teach her because she would pay no attention to them period..Was a loner..I got her going and hunted her untill almost 2.5 yr old.. If one was in 200 yards..You could get it treed..If not she was back at the truck..I tried everything I knew and read to try and get her to go..She finally went..AWAY from here anyhow LOL.....If they dont have the desire..Might as well start over..I'll never mess with one that long again..

i'm in the same situation with my 8 month old. he'll go deeper by himself than he will when he's with another dog which seems off to me. when he's with another dog he'll go about 200 yards then come right back if they haven't struck. i''ve got a feeder behind my house he knows where is. he'll run down to it from about 100 yards and if nothings been there he'll just turn around and come back. he doesn't wanna keep going down the creek to find em. i figured as he got older he'd start going deeper but i guess ill see with some time.

they things are today with hounds getting shot and people not wanting dogs on there land i wish mine would hunt close
