-- When the bark collar doesn't work... (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=355458)
When the bark collar doesn't work...
Is there any other option?
Here is our situation:
We have half a dozen hounds, and two in particular were, according to our neighbors, barking nonstop all day long and then would stop when we got home from work.
So I spent $200 on two Tri-tronics Bark Limiters. We did everything by the book - put it on, left it turned off for 3 days, and seemed like everything was going great. Our landlord said one stopped completely, but the other, Rocky, still barked some.
So, we turned up the volume... and he still barks... turned it up... and he still barks. And now we are at the level 5 setting, and Rocky still barks.
At level 5, he will start a normal bark and then it seems like he just keeps going and going until he gets out of breath, then stops. And 10 minutes later (or however long), he'll do the same thing.
The barking issue has just come up over the past few months or so - and he has one of those barks you can hear miles away, so it is definitely an issue. It seems like the worse he is disciplined for it, the more he does it...
Nothing has changed, as far as his home environment. We are at a loss, here. Muzzling him during the day would be the only option I know of right now and it being so hot, I'd worry about him being able to get water, etc.
To those who want to say he needs a bullet... I believe this is fixable - after all, he is 4 years old and it has never been an issue before...
Anyone have any suggestions?

Put a real shock collar on him and show him that he cant bark through the shock. after a few lessons go back to the bark collar it will work as a reminder.

I have mine in a garage building and if they get to barky I just shut the doors and it is dark in there and they can't see out. It seems to keep them pretty quiet.
I can't take a barking dog. I would do whatever it takes to stop them barking.

maybe you need to put both collors on him and see if that will work,,if it dont you need to get a more powerfull remote collar that will knok him to his knees ..
you didnt say if he was on a chain or kennel or if you might have moved his buddy which might have been moved away from him, where he might be lonesome for his friend..
if he's in a kennel and will share food/space with another dog ,you might put his friend in the kennel durning the day and take out when you get home if he dont carry on after you get home..
if he's on a chain you might hook a highpowered electric fencer wire to the chain and have someone set in the house with the cord and plug it in when he starts barking if non of the other works,,those fencers should know him to his knees and get his attention if nothing else works,,
i know what you going thru ,i had one in town once and if you whiped him for barking he would bark that much harder/louder,,finially gave him to some people in the country that didnt care if they barked 24/7
good luck..

I did think about putting both collars on him the other day. We will try it - something has got to give.
I will also give the regular shock collar a try.
He is on a chain, but like I said, nothing in his environment has changed. He has been on a chain forever, and all our dogs are in the same place as they were when this all started...
I can't put him in a kennel because he will not stay in Apparently he likes the taste of metal and has mangled more than one chain link kennel - once to get OUT and once to get IN...

Sounds like he is bored.Maybe you should get him off the chain and take him hunting or get him some major exercise.

Maybe he's barking at something that isn't supposed to be there.
Get you a dogtra bark collar..Put it on TIGHT..I dont think a dog in this world can bark through it turned up wide open!

Be careful if you ever need to shock him on something he's might not bark with shock collar on. Try both collars

i agree with the above post. take it, and his buddies, out to the country and road hunt him about 10 miles. he'll sleep the next day anyway. i have two dogs that like to bark. the bark collars work for them.

Another thing to think about
Be absolutely certain that there is nothing physically going on with the dog. A lot of times when a behavior starts "out of the blue", there is something wrong.
A check up at the vet might be in order just to rule out something that could be bothering him internally. Dogs can't talk so they have to let us know by whining or barking when something is wrong. He could be bored or something else but if this is totally new behavior, I'd get him checked out before I shocked him too much.
Just thinking outside the box.
Wishing you good luck with your hounds!
Rocket 88
I use a BB gun, pumped 5 times. If 1 gets to barking, pop em in the butt. Doesn't go in the skin, but they get the idea fast. Now all I have to do is shake it and they shut up and go in their box.
I have one thats even knows if I'm in the room that has the BB gun in and she goes in her box. Let me open the door ands say 'That's enough' and all dogs scurry.

I haven't read all the post but it sounds like the collar isn't on tight enough. No dog can stand the shock and keep on barking if the collar is working right and on level 5. Now if you tighten it down make sure you check it because it can wear sore spots on the dogs neck. You should be able to buy replacement battery local if you think the battery is weak.
I sell and recommend the Tri Tronics collar along with the Dotra YS500 Yapper Stopper. I get a lot of call from customers saying the collar isn't shocking their dog. I ask them to tighten it down some and everyone has call back and said that was the problem.
with it being summer time are you getting a flea or fly problem?

I honestly think he continues to bark because it is shocking him... He barks once and it startles him into another bark and he just keeps at it until he is out of breath.

You've only got 3 choices in life, give in, give up, or give it all you got.
take a sprinkler and hook it up when the dogs bark turn iit on/its the best resolution i have seen after 1 afternoon i heard no more barking at all and now i had a pup in the kennel(you know how pups are)well when the pup barks the other dogs hit there box cause they think the sprinklers coming. cheapest most economical resolution
Ok nobody ever pays me attention but here goes. Get a tread mill or run his guts out everyday somehow. Most people think their dogs get enough excercise but they are not. I rabbit hunt with a guy that retired when he was 55 and he now is 82. He hunts his dogs 3-4 times a week, at least twice a week in the summer and when he goes, he runs 5-6 hours. His dogs are tired when they get home and on their off days they rest. This is not a crack at you but dogs are like people in that they are not the same and it sounds like you got an energetic one that needs his butt run ragged he'll love it and make you happy in the process. Good luck!!
