Anybody can handle the dog during timeout.
time out called
no he can not unless the whole cast agrees upon it.Timeout can,t be called until the tree is scored. This is clearly a judgement call. It's only a hunt if the dog declared treed is their and is clearly seen, what does it matter he or she's backup handler handles the dog? We need to just get along at these hunts and don't sweat the small stuff.

How about UKC word on this?
ukc
you need to call ukc on this. If you enter the dog it is your reponsibility to call, and handle your own dog. A back up handler is only their for an emergency. Then only , you relinquish the hunt to your back up handler. Some interpret this wrong.

What does it matter who ties and leads the dog as long as the same person calls the dog every drop. By handler and back-up handler, I think it is meaning the calling of the dog. If you want your little boy or girl or wife or cousin or best friend to tie and lead your dog during a hunt, I don't care. Hey, here is my lead, when we get to the tree tie mine if you don't care, and if your lucky I may let you lead it out for me, too.

Anybody can tie the dog or lead it or load or unload it from the truck.
To answer your question about the difference between a back-up handler or a spectator....there isn't one really. You are allowed to take two people with you and you can call them back-up handler or spectator or whatever. Either one would be eligible to tie the dog at the tree or lead it.

I can not believe that 2 guys can handle 1 dog? I don't really have a problem with this personaly but how far will this go? I will set in the truck and call the dog by my radio. This is using 2 peoples body and mind against one. Why can't we use ATV for those who can't keep up! Handling dog are the same no matter how you get there as long as wait the 5 min.

I'm to the point where I could sure stand to use this rule allowing someone else to physically handle my dog for me. The problem is finding someone fool enough to take the job.

What a person needs is one of those young Bucks that will keep his mouth shut and light off and can lead and leash your dog and not be a bigger problem than the dog is.LOL.

quote:I've been going to these hunts for a long time, and I was always of the opinion that, according to the information under *1. under UKC Nite Hunt Honor Rules, that there was no mention of two people handling one dog. Now if UKC says two people can handle one dog, it changes my opinion. Personally, I am sixty-three years old, I thought that was what the "Senior Casts" were for, to afford the older handlers a place to compete. I realize they aren't allowed in RQE's or the world hunt, but they could be. My biggest question is: the handling and leading of the dog would be the least of my worries, if I was competing in a cast. Some of the terrain we hunt is tough on man and beast; if you can't lead you dog, how you gonna make it through some of the underbrush, and up and down steep creeks and canyons? If your only concern is leading the dog, take a half-hitch on his flank and I guarantee he won't be pulling or jerking you. JMO, thanks, Tom

What differance does it make who holds the leash as long as the handler calls the dog and the other guy keeps his mouth shut and light down?

Grady, it probably doesn't make any difference, but if you read the rules, without clarifacation, they say," one handler to each dog". In thirty-five years this is the first time I have seen that two handlers was acceptable. It's just new to me, that's all. Tom
