Help with dogs feet.

We have a female that we want to show the only fault we can find looks wise is her feet. They are very flat. I used to say she had duck's feet. They have gotten a little better over the past year but not very much. Was wanting to know if anyone had any suggestions on what to do to work with her on making her stand on her toes more and keep them together so she doesn't look like she has duck feet. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks.

There is only so much you can do with feet.. You can pinch under her chest (between her front legs) to get her to stand up on them.. You can also squeeze her toes together.. Squeeze her toes together, then pinch her to get her to stand up..

But.. It will only do so much.. I'm in the same boat.. I have a little female who is built pretty darn nice for a hunting dog and both her parents have nice feet.. But I hate hers...

Thanks we have tried both the pinching the chest and the squeezing them and that don't help much. She is awesome except for her duck feet. Oh well guess we will just keep her in the woods since it doens't matter what her feet look like when she is treeing coon. Thanks for the input though.

What is she kenneled on? Concrete will flatten feet - get her off of it if you can. If you can get her on some large gravel, you'll see those feet tighten up within a couple weeks - at least as much as her genetics will allow. Running around on sand also will help build up the muscles in the feet.

make sure she gets plenty of exercise out of the pen to strength her toes. Try putting beer bottle caps under her back pads when she is on the bench for a while the dog will not want to put weight on them and start standing on her toes. my grandpa taught me this when i had a dog that would not stand on her toes and it worked for me.

Thanks

She is kenneled on stones. Have other hounds on cement and they have better toes than she does. I have heard people always say not to put them on concreate cause it hurts their feet but honestly we have better luck with that than the stones. As for beer bottle caps guess will have to find someone that has some so we can give it a shot. Thanks again for the help.

Sometimes dog are just built like that and there's nothing you can do. We have two dogs with totally flat feet. Nothing you can do sometimes

Flat footed

There is alot to consider, and alot of good points out there. What I have found is that dogs feet go flat when ther growing and finally tighten up when there done growing. There feet cant support them until there done growing. One of the best things is to exersize them as much as possible and for the concrete theory I've always had concrete and think its the only way to go .Its easier to keep clean and a clean dog is a healthy dog.If concrete was so bad ,all shelters,Vets offices,Animal control facilities, would all be cruel. This is just my opinion though and figured I would shre it with you. It's worked for me for 25 years and I'M A BENCH SHOW JUDGE AND KNOW DOGS FEET VERY WELL.Hope you can come up with a fix.

I will get a picture of just her legs and feet up here in the next couple days. I am thinking that she will probably never have feet worthy of the show ring. Thanks for all the advice from everyone.

Scott and Nicole, I don't know how old your pup is or how her feet normally look on the ground, but I can tell you that most of the young dogs I've raised and/or bench broke start out with questionable feet on the bench. When they're new to the whole bench routine they often won't relax enough to stand up on their toes, even if they have decent feet on the ground. I wouldn't give up hope just yet...young dogs' feet change a LOT as they grow. I've had a couple pups that had terrible feet at your pup's size, and their feet look just fine now. Good luck!

you got what you have got if she is good enough show her
if not hunt it.jr over 1yr no longer a puppy.

put 2 boards across your bench where her feet will go. They only need to be about 2 inches high. set her feet up so her big pads are on the board and her toe pads are on the bench. She will get up on her toes if you work her long enough like this... I will take a picture so you know what i mean
