Ginseng Season....Anyone on here dig it?
I was just wondering if anyone on the board dug Ginseng?
What's the highest price that it's going for a green pound?
What's the highest price that it's going for a dried pound?
Where do you live?

EVERYTHING happens for a reason.
I dig alittle about every year and here in Tn it is bringin $5 an ounce green.
dig it?
I didn't even know it grew in this country. I thought it was all imported from Asia. Do you plant it or look for it growing wild? If you're not putting us on at $5 per oz. I think it would be a worthwhile crop to cultivate.

Yeah, that's about what it's bringing here too...
$75 a green pound
$300 a dried pound.
Did you know that you can dry it in a dehydrator, and it will still dry, but not lose near as much weight?
Skyblu:
You can cultivate ginseng, but it will not grow like it does in the wild. You can take the roots and compare them and tell the difference just by looking at them.
Most buyers will not accept cultivated "sang" only wild. That is what makes it worth so much $$$. Why would they want to buy it, if the can grow it in their backyard? See, what I'm getting at?
It's also used quite a bit as an aphrodesiac, and believe me, it works!! It's like old school Viagra!!
Jacob:
Have you ever heard of a "man root"? If you have, what have you heard about it?

I have dug quite a bit of it, I have made as high as 80 dollars an hour doing it.
Most gensing is sold in Asia and they want the wild gensing, which has compact growth rings. Cultivated grows much faster and when they break it they can tell that it grew too fast so IF you can sell it it will sell for less than half what the wild will sell for.
The year I made 80 bucks an hour was when I got 400 dollars a pound for it back in the middle 90's
The man root that I have heard of is one that grew in the shape of a man. I have found some close, but not quite. The rumor is that you can get thousands out of one that has a head, two arms body and two legs. Don't know that it's true but I have found some that were close but maybe missing a leg, or body etc.

The hills round here have been just about raped of Shang. You still find a plant here and there though. I did transplant 2 plants that I found and put them up in the woods here at the house. 1 is a 3 prong and 1 is a 4 prong. I plucked the berries off the 3 prong and set them out next to the parent plant but the berries on the second plant are just now starting to turn so I will do the same with them when they are ready.

Christy, I could do without the personal side of it. LOL
I'm being 100% serious!!
In Asia, they use it for "personal" stuff, and also and an herbal tea.
It is really good to give you energy, to pep you up. Tastes like crap, but it'll give you a good energy boost.
Quincy has found a man root, it's almost completely perfect, just one arm is longer than the other. He's had it 3 years, and it's almost in porportion.

Guys, those prices SOUND high, but unless you got some found in a really remote area that is up big it will take alot longer to get a pound than you think. It dries up to nothing (drying it in a brown paper bag in a dark room helps it to hold weight). That year I made 80 bucks an hour was when I had some found in a gulf where people hadn't been in a very long time. The next year I went back(because it only comes up every other year so there were plenty of big ones that were not up for me to see the year before) the first day of the season and somebody had dug it illegal and beat me to it. Except they didn't do like me and leave the small stuff, they dug every piece they could find.
That's the way it is most places now, find a piece here and there. You might find a few small patches but alot of what you find will be small. If youre like me you leave the small stuff for seed, but some aint.

It has been about dug to death around here too. Me and my uncle found a little side hollow right beside dads place and we dug between 35 - 40 ounces in one mornin in there but for the most part a pretty good mornin is 5 ounces or so here and I have had a few mornings without findin a single root.
it grows in minn...
fellow coonhunter friend has been picking it for years. claims he's made from $5,000-$10,000 for his efforts. think i'll go for a visit...rofl!!

You can dry it in a dehydrator and it won't lose near the weight that it does natural.
That's the way that we do it, and our buyer says it's fine.
We took a pound green and dried it natural, it ended up being about 2 1/2 ounces.
We took a pound green and dried it in dehydrator, it was 4 1/2 oz.
