BAWL has it pretty well dead on, you dont really want somthing that is going to run flat out and leave the pup, or somthing that looks like a million dollar dog one night and might do awful the next. Just a solid coondog that you can rely on to give you a can ALMOST every time you go, no junk, not ill, and wont be bothered by things the pup does.

no matter what the pup does?
your best pup trainers are your older for rreal coondawgs that were some of the best when they were young but now there older a little slower so a pup can stay up with them. thats why the majority of so called pup trainers are older dogs and the best ones will be happy to sit back on there butt at the tree so the pup can get all up on the tree and get a nose full. most of your best pup trainers were hard to beat in there younger years by being straight cooners without alot of bs. consistency everytime you cut them loose.
my pup is 5 mos. old and ready to get hauled to the woods but he's not going to go hunting by himself so I want another dog that is a good dog but maybe a little geriatric so this soft pup can keep up. I have never used a pup trainer but I can see where it would be good to start a pup in a social setting rather than alone so they don't get freaked out the first time you drop with another dog say in a hunt. I guess that might be a pup trainer. I won't overdo it though, just part of training. I like to know just what the pup's natural tendencies are and like to hunt them alone for the most part.
A pup trainer is me. Only if I got to though. A pup is too little a pup if he can't load his ownself in the dogbox. Then he can keep up. A pup training dog is straight and good natured. PERIOD. A pup trainer is also a "CHECK DOG" another term used by real coonhunters that has gone by the wayside, that most people can't comprehend anymore.
A pup can keep up with the best of dogs in the woods that's working a track. They might not be able to keep up with a racehorse that runs a mile down an abanded railroad track before he starts to hunt, I'll agree.
The best pup trainer I had was a Sackett Jr dog starting pups with him when he was 20 months old cause I could trust him. He wasn't no dummy. By the time he was three he would lie like heck. No kidding, he would tree the coon, trail on and tree till all the others joined in. Then I started getting him figured out. He'd plant those suckers on a naked tree and when he could see lights coming through the woods he wouldn't tree so hard and by the time you got to the tree in all that ruckus you'd here him treed 100 yards somewhere else. But you'd never know that's what he was doing without paying careful attention. He ruint some pups, yes, but the smart ones learned to smell for themselves. He did this till he was about eight then he got a little carried away with himself, or a little senile, and would forget to ease off. But then I could shine the tree and even cuss whisper "there ain't no coon in this tree" and he'd look at me and take off to the right tree. Ya'll might hate it but that's the way it was (still is). But he didn't raise no fools.
A good pup trainer is an invaluable tool. I get them started with a pup trainer and then single them out once they got the idea. If they struggle, then another week with the wise one.

A good pup trainer is one that does the job the way that you want your pup to be able to do it.
Yep, the way some people would have you believe is that if you want to start a three month old pup, a wore out pup trainer fills a 2 month nitch from can't to CAN. Meaing that a 5 moth old pup CAN out run a buck. I can't afford to feed a dog for that tiny little purpose. If you want a pup oblivious to the world, you need to get a deaf one, or deafen one, or beat him or shock him off every tree that he doesn't tree first on.
