Seeking benchshow judging mentors

I have been actively involved in purebred dogs over 40 years. Judge all-breeds. My breed is beagles. Have studied UKC Coondog standards and know canine structure and anatomy fairly well. Would like mentors to help fine tune knowledge specifically related to correct breed type of each specific breed and how it contributes to performance in the field. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I am in NE Ohio. I would like someone with great knowledge of the breed to ask questions to, recomend books or magazine articles on the subject of correct structure as it pertains to each of the specific coonhound breeds. Pictures of the most excellent specimens of each breed. It is easy to choose dogs with sound motion and strong basic conformation but in the end the judges selections should also elevate those hounds that are most correct in breed type for their specific breed. By the standards there are many differences other than just color. With the Plott being the most different. I tend to base my judging more on the strengths of the hounds rather than on faults so it is extremely important to know what is correct and why it is correct.

Stay away from anything that reminds you of a Whippet! They are coonhounds, not Whippets! Give me a call, my number is posted below, will be more then happy to talk to you and give you pointers, if you like.

This is not a good way to go about "fine tuning" your knowledge. As the only thing that is going to happen is people will tell you that what they have or are currently showing and/or breeding is closest to the standard. JMO.

I beg to differ... Curt Willis and Amanda Alexander give seminars and spend about 1 hour going over standards of EACH breed (7 hours total). So there are seminars and I am sure if you looked there are more than just these 2 that offer seminars.

"strong basic conformation" may have been a missleading phrase. excellent or good may be better word choices. In the beagle breed smooth muscle is better than bulky muscle that is found more comonly in breeds designed to pull weight. Muscle that is too thick and bulky in nature decreases endurance. It is important to remember that if the muscle is too thick that oxygen must be pumped to all that extra muscle tissue. A beagle that is ran hard but has the correct type of muscle will be firm but not bulky. Somewhat eligant by design. And yet with substantial bone that keeps good thickness all the way to the foot.

Does anyone have a list of the large events and when and where they take place. The beagle events are listed a month in advance but the large events have similar dates each year. Does it work the same with Coonhound events?

Basics

As an all breed judge you probably already know about the importance of overall balance, angulation and drive & reach. There are too many "top winning" bench show dogs that are EXTREMELY straight in the shoulder and rear. Remember, 90 degree shoulder angulation with matching rear angulation is PARAMOUNT for hounds expected to cover ground efficiently. Hounds that stand on the bench like statues with talented handlers setting them up should be evaluated on the ground AND on the bench, with judges standing back to see overall balance, angulation, etc. Yes, Plotts are different from the other breeds, but they need correct angulation and overall balance too.

Very Well stated skyblu! I keep overhearing "well how did this dog get this far if it is not correct" if every judge took as much time and interest in bettering the breed standard and not their oppinion of it you would not here this comment as much. just 1 more questions for the all breed judges is it true
that the small bred house dogs are judge on a bench
at westminster and other big shows

Yes efficient movement is paramount. Drive and reach are necessities of performance. Showmanship or "standing like a statue" has little to do with a dog's physical makeup. I base much of my decision on breed type and motion so a dog that gaits nicely and has excellent motion would have an advantage. Temperament also counts to me as does physical conditioning. Everything that helps the dog perform its task in the field is important.

Yes we examine the little dogs on a table. Then they are on the ground the rest of the time.

Thanks for the help so far! Have a ways to go on these breeds because they are breeds I don't see regularly. Have seen some excellent coonhounds at Premier.

same as we do it with the excepton of placing every dog
like you see on t.v. i like the ideal of sending 6-10 dogs
out in a group.why lead 1 at a time there is nothing out
there to judge against like we do at the local clubs
might even save 10 min a class.
