Does anyone else think think people are asking alittle too much for a dog ????

I mean I know it is their dog and if they want to ask 20,000 for every dog they have that is their choice.
But it seems like the price people are asking for a normal dog that will run a tree coon is 800 to 1000. I mean I know a good one is hard to find but if these poeple really wanted to sale them then they would be alittle cheaper anyways/

Add up the cost of getting one to that point and 800-1000 isn't out of line. Heck they sell puppies for 300 and who knows if they will turn out. Add $500-700 to it and you have a dog you know will tree a coon the day you bring it home.

compared to any other breed of dog there are cheap. look are field trial retriever, pointers, show pitbulls, schutzhund french ring bred gsd's and mals..

Posted by EnglishBabe on 05-12-2010 11:16 PM:

Nope! Not when those little dust mop and ankle biters are bring $800-$1000 a piece and mixed breeds are bring $500-$700 a piece. Coonhound prices are cheap. Pups bring far less then a Rottweiler or Collie pup, even just for a pet.

I have a litter of English Bulldogs here right now that will sell for $1200-$1500 each as an 8 wk. old pup. To bad I'm only raising them for someone, I could use that money!

You want a well trained dog, your gonna have to pay the price. If you don't want to pay that, buy a pup and raise it and train it yourself. You will come out about even.

anydog for less than 800-1,000$.

that is "lightly started" "hates a cage coon" "will go with the other dogs" and older than 11 months old, they want 400-500$ for the dog.

and I promise its a cull. or they would keep it.

800-1500$ is right, go hunt all the dogs first and be prepared to go home empty handed more ofrten than not.

I've paid 800-2000$ for runnin treein coondogs 19 months old to 5 years old. younger ones worth more.

have any of you ever got a pup started or finished one? i dont think so. would u guys hunt one enough til it will tree a coon by itself for $1000? i wouldnt. i'll take every dog that i can turn loose by itself and it will bust in there and get struck and treed and stay there til i get there for $800 - $1000. any of you guys got any?

Posted by Bob Hennessey on 05-13-2010 02:15 AM:

I think if the dog sells for the asking price then it wasn't priced too high. If it doesn't sell then the asking price was too high. When I was in the horse business that's the way it was, dog business is the same way. Really the price isn't a factor you just need a seller and a buyer. JMO.

The economy is bad. Coondogs are cheaper now than 10 years ago. I think the reason for that is that I have four trained finished dogs to sell. If I didn't they would be high as heck and I'd probably do like I always do and just train my own. Funny how it works like that, if you got it nobody wants it, if you're looking for it, it's out of reach. LOL

Don't forget POOP! The female isn't housebroken and I now have to rip up my carpet in that room and replace it. I found hairless CATS on the internet for $2000 on up! Who would want a hairless cat??? Who has that kind of money to spend on a CAT???? Most I ever paid for a coondog was $600 and she was one hell of a possum treeing machine, but absolutely worthless as a coondog. I now have a friend that trains my pups after i get them started, if I was to pay him say $225 or $300 a month, in 3 mos. time I would have a semi trained pup for close to $1000. So either way you look at it, a well started dog or finished dog for $1000 is a fair price IF you are willing to pay it, which I can't afford, but I love to read the classifieds and look at the prices some folks are asking for their dogs. Fun way to spend an afternoon!

Well you take that cheap or free pup and keep books on it AND be honest with the book keeping.........Keep track or the Frontline, the wormer, food, gas to hunt, equipment, entery fees to hunts and any other expence. Then add the expence of the pup you spent all that on and wasn't worth the first bowl of feed and see how much you have spent getting one good dog.
Can't never tell. If you keep better books you may decide that the first $ 400.00 invested in a well papered dog isn't so bad. When some one wants it for there breeding program or wants to give you a few thousand for it becouse they know they can make it back in the money hunts...............Iam not high class but if I am going to buy a lottory ticket and they tell me what the first number is. I am going to get one with that number right atleast.

Best way to save a dollar is find a pup that has good papers and hold your breath...My best dog in my kennels was a 100 dollars as a pup...It helps that I train my own tho. Four of my dogs were free and the last one I just got has some great lookin papers.

Good broke coondogs are way to cheap, and raising puppies is for suckers. Buy a good bread pup 300, feed it for two years and keep it healthy 600, haul it to the woods a couple hundred nights, put gas in the truck, buy a license, vet bills, shock collar so you can get it broke off trash.
Now remember if your lucky about 1 out of three might make a top hound. So 3,000 fora top hound that you can have right now is pretty cheap. The trick is finding that good one but if you do pay what the man wants because trust me hes not gettin rich.

The younger they do it the more hunting time you have with that coon dog. If they are hard going enough to do it at a young age they should be worth more. BUT you better know what you are doing handleing one at that age. They can be messed up as easier than they can be trained at that age.

A dog is only worth what someone is willing to pay. In the coonhound world, there are a bunch of tightwads(me included) and then there are a bunch that have more money than sense. As long as those two factors remain, hounds will be bought and sold for pennies and for sums that make %99 of us laugh. It ain't about the money spent, its about the mans word that you are handing the money to.

The best years of a hounds productive life are from 4 to 8 years old. If they have been hunted they will be at the top of their game at 4.
If you think those 10-16 month worldbeaters are for real you spend way to much time reading Ads. and not nearly enough time in the woods. Go back and look at the average age of the dogs that have won the world hunt for the last ten years and i think you will be surprised.
