Why do you choose the breed of coon hound that you prefer to hunt.I hunt a B/T a blue dog my buddy's hunt Walkers at the end of the night they all get the job done.

i have owned or hunted with every breed out there and i guess i just have a better success rate with blue dogs. plus i love the look of them..

I hunt B&T's because all other breeds are a dime a dozen. If you look at the numbers , we ( as a breed) are out numbered. I like the traits in the black dogs, as well as the looks , mouth , and desire they have. I started out with a pup out of the original Bo Didley which was owned by my uncle Danny Whitehurst and then later sold to Jr Ralston and Bill Boatman. I have tried other breeds and never satisfied with what I had . I guess the old sayin kinda sticks..

Around here I'm the under dog 99% of all other hunters hunt Walkers.I really like my Black dog he has been really easy to train he is ready to go any time hunts hard and as long as you want him to no matter the conditions

what breed

I have also had or hunted with almost every breed out there. I was a bluetick and english guy myself, until I started hunting with a guy that runs a old line of walker. Now we are working together and having very good luck. I might mention we hunt coon, bear, yotes, and bobcat with the same dogs. Also we hunt with alot of different pepole and breeds of dogs the main thing is if they do the job and they suit you hunt them and remember the other guys hunt dogs that suit them so don't judge the dog by the color of it's hair.

if you use the same dogs to hunt yotes and coon how do you keep them running what you want when you want?

I realize that when a dog strikes, he has to follow the hot or cold trail wherever it goes. The trail might go left or right or away or back towards you. It would seem like 25% chance of either direction. The reason I got away from Walkers is that 2 minutes after being cut loose, they would strike 1/4 to a half mile deep and then it was always 75% he'd be going away. By the time I could crankup and get close enough to hear some race, when I'd step out they'd be treed. Probably only five races a year would they bring a coon by me.

For the last 4 or 5 years I have been hunting Leopards. My chances of getting struck have gone from a 1/4 to half mile down to two hundred feet to two hundred yards, not always but a heck of alot more. The chances of a coon running in a circle back by or to me has increased to about half. I like that. It's probably just a chance thing but I like my chances a whole lot more.

I hunt a family of dogs not a breed of dogs. I had many dogs of many breeds back in the 70s and the first part of the 80s. I finally got me a walker puppy that showed me exactly what a coon dog was supposed to be. That was in 1983. He died in 1988. I made a promise as I buried him to keep dogs out of him as part of my family as long as I had dogs. It has been a long road with many turns, many successes, and even some trying times, but with the help of friends I have been able to keep that promise.

Fact of the matter is I enjoy any good hunting dog of any breed.

Coonsmen we will only run yotes in the datlight and on snow. Also we put the dogs nose in the track of what we want to run. With young hounds we will get a chase we don't want like a cat when we want to run coon when we free cast.

I have hunted every breed of coonhound there is, as well as several cur lines. The best I ever had was a redbone grade hound. The worst were walkers. I really like B&T's and have had some good ones as well. I have always liked Blueticks because they are pretty but never had a really good one. I have had a few good Plotts but just cant make a coon dog out of a potentially good bear dog. Never cared too much for English but have had a couple of fair dogs. I culled every Mtn. Cur I ever had by two years old and should have at one year. I never had a leopard for a coon hound but used them for bear and hog with great success. I currently have two Bluetick pups, one leopard pup, and one old redtick pup trainer.

I plan to train the Blueticks and sell them and get more leopards. Leopards have always had a place in my heart. Love the colors. But most of all I like a dog that has good sense and wishes to please me, rather than charging through the woods pleasing only themselves.
