Bee Keepers------------Bee Keepers

Split a couple of boxes of bees yesterday. Put a new Queen in the new boxes, left the Queens in the old boxes. Changed the brood from one hive to a new box. Got home with a couple of old supers, I noticed a small group of bees in one corner of the super. Took them back to the hives and brushed them off, Brought the supers home today started to unload them their was a queen and 1 honey bee.

Question What should I do with the queen??? Which box would you try to put her In ??? One of the two I slpit, or the one I changed the brood to a new Hive ???

Cleo, I don't have a clue either, just trying to get started. As for how much honey they make, I'll let you know a little later .

alot of honey production depends on the size of the hive, how old the hive is, and how food is available for the bees....as well as how long winters are...my buddy is a bee keeper..i was picking up info here n there just by asking him stuff...

but you gotta leave honey in there for the bees over the winder or you'll kill the hive..so its not as simple as just stealin their honey...

and new hives i think he really doesnt mess with the first year..could be wrong though..

no idea about the original question...i stayed away when he started walkin towards the hives! lol

Yes you're right, I think most Bee Keepers say to leave at least 60 pounds for the bees to winter on. I usually leave a whats In the brood box, and a full super.

Do you know anything about ground bees? I have some gold colored docile bees that are digging burrows in my garden < what are they, are they pollinaters?

From your description, sounds like miner bees......yes they pollinate......With the honey bee problem the last couple of years, they have helped the pollination with the lack of honey bees.

put the queen in a super with newspaper between the super and hive. when the workers cut through to her they will keep her if they dont have a queen. if they do the strongest queen will kill the weaker one. if you have brood in the hive the workers should hatch a queen if they dont have one.

Hey Joey, I bet you have never seen a lazy Bee. Get yourself a colony, It's really interesting.

did you put her in a cage or anything for a period of time for them to accept her??? If they do not have some time to get used to her then the hive will not take her. A few more specifics and I'll get ya where you need to be. My dad operates around 150 hives and I've grew up hating the work that goes with them.

I think I put her in the hive she came out of, but just in case I did'nt, I've got to queens to pick up monday. Going to go back in and requeen them.

About all of our queens come in a 3-hole Benton cage and that allows for the queen and 4-6 workers to acclimate themselves to the hive. Just pull out the cork end on the "candy" side and by the time the workers eat through then the hive will accept her. We've recently started doing our own grafting of queens and that has saved alot of money, but on a small scale it is not worth it. As far as salvaging that hive, get the workers back to it and introduce her slowly and you'll have it made! Beekeeping is one of the few things you can double your return in a year if you put the time and effort into it. Trust me...it's funner to make 10 gallons than 50 drums! LOL Good luck and if you need any help feel free to ask. Dad says he wouldn't recommend anyone doing it besides a hobby nowadays. Between the new diseases and parasites it's hard to spend the time with them it requires. Beekeeping is a lost art around here anymore. Good luck!!!!!!

Whistle there are a few good books out there on bee keeping. A buddy and I are going to give this a shot this year.... We are putting our hives together, and are going after bees in June. Be keeping for dummies is a pretty good read. I do not have any idea what I am getting into, but it should be interesting. LOL

Scott, as you say bee's are Interesting little creature's. I'm going to order books for help. What I'm In to now, I ordered bee's got them In the brood box, It's been two weeks and three days, they are doing great. My ??? Is do I put a shallow super on, or a deep one ???

Has a big text that tells you everything you want to know about bee keeping. Our son Kelly had them for a project when he was in 4-H. Lots of work when it is hot. They even A-I bees to get the type of dosel good honey makeing bees they have today. We need more bees for polanation. Larry

Ok guys we caught a swarm march 23rd today they swarmed and we managed to catch it. We put the first swarm in a big super then a couple weeks later added another super and excluder. The ??? is why did they swarm so soon? We put the new swarm in a big super and plan to do the same to it. They swarmed about 45ft up in alil oak i had to trim it all the way up to be able to cut the limb and lower it down to dad talk about nerve racking!

When the economy picks up I think I will. Bee's working a hive is an act of magical nature that I would like for my young son to experience.

I'm going to go all out on a couple of hives, gonna give them the best boxes and treatment they can have. I'm waiting on some one to tell me what to do with the ones I have In the boxes. I need to know, If I should put on shallow, or deep supers on top of the brood boxes. I want to give them all the room they need for brood.

It's been years sinec I've messed with bees any at all. My granddad kept them while I was growing up and after he died, we quit. I really need to get some of his old hives and start back. I used to love helping him....
