How important is coonhunting in you life?
Personally, I tend to be an extremist. Once I develop an interest in a hobbie or sport, I will go for broke until I have exhausted all my resources, or given my absolute best effort and achieved as much as I feel I possibly can.
Extreme anything is never good, but I can never seem to strike a balance. I will sacrafice it all and have paid the price in the past for being this way. With other hobbies and different time I have lost money, relationships, and valuable time. Right now this happens to be working with hounds.
Would like to see through the poll to fellow coonhunters how coonhunting or working with hounds fit into your life. How important is it to you??

i think its the most exciting type of hunting, when everythings going smooth, but can also be the worst nights of your life, when them dogs just seem to be pissing you off on purpose...so from week to week coonhunting can be my favorite thing to do, or my enemy

Family-friends, God for giving me everything, coondogs, making a living to support coondogs.
For me, coonhunting and working with the dogs is not a hobby, IT"S A WAY OF LIFE. Coonhunting is my drug, it calms me, it excites me, it frustrates me and I love it. I wouldn't say it's more important than my family, but it's not far behind. Anyone that's ever raised a pup and watched it progress and tree for that first time can't tell me that's not a rush unlike any other.

it was "a way..
of life" until 1990 when i remarried. LOL! i've lasted longer than the fella that started me with coonhunting. LOL! i lived to hunt..loved to show. i've had to slow down now..but..when the cold frost comes..I still yearn to hunt and MISS IT!! nothing can compare to a good hound in the timber..and the great friendships that come from it..

I love to hunt so much, thats about all I do. I sit in the treestand about every morning, go to class, go back to the stands. Get home, eat and load the hounds. This is every day. Wouldnt miss it for the world, and am sure not gonna let somebody tell me I cant go today. NAH, I will just stay single for another twenty years or so before that happens.
coonhunting is life the hounds are my children.

Well let's see
I love to hunt it get's me away from all of the World's stress that get's put upon me during the day. A nice night out with my hounds seems to calm the spirit a whole lot. I love being outside with all that God created. I love the sound of those hounds singing in a distance and seeing old ringtail once I get there. I don't shoot many coons but thank them in my mind for the night they have provided for me. It is a lot of enjoyment when your hounds strike a track and drive it and then put a end to it and having the meat no better feeling. I love working with pups and see how green they are and eventually put it all together and make nice hounds. That is what coon hunting is to me. I love to comp. hunt but mainly for the part of meeting new and old people and to see if all my hard work has paid off that is it. Not to bash different breed of hounds or handlers just because they might know more than me but to get to have fun even in losing the battle of the hunt. It makes the winning a whole lot more enjoyable. Well I have taken up enough of your time take care and may God truly Bless you all.

I used to put it above everything. Lost a wife and a few girl friends. Now I'm a little older and have a different wife and small kids its further down the list. Thet are only young once.
Coon hunting is fun but my love would be hog hunting. I only go once or twice a year with some buddies of mine because its too addicting for me.
I would like to give one piece of advice though, Its easier to find a wife than a good coonhound. And a coon hound isn't nearly as expensive.

My wife does'nt care if I hunt everynight lol I think she enjoys me gone rofl. Hunting is great I like being outdoors but there are other things that come first. I hate it when I can't go and want to but don't dwell on it just do the task at hand. I'd rather hunt than watch tv any night or day but family comes first.

If I had feelings, that might would have hurt.
It's a whole different World, out there after dark.
It's been about 63 years since my first Coonhunt, & even on the bad nights, I've enjoyed being outdoors. To me, there's nothing more nostalgic then being outdoors with a good coondog, with a Buddy or by myself. I could set for hours & listen to the NIGHT TIME NATURE of Owls, Spring Peepers, Coyote's, or a Train whistle off in the distance while my dog works an old bad track. There have been alot of nights, that I've just set on a log for an hour or so & thought about what was bothering me. I've even layed down & went to sleep several times. I've had several different hobbies in my lifetime, Golfing, Fishing, Flying a plane, but Coonhunting has always won out in the end. As I get older, Coonhunting has become my Physical Fitness Program. Many more nights like last night & I'll be in top shape again, 4 hours in the steep hill's around Kinkaid Lake. Yes, I still like a good Comp. Hunt, & I'm still able to keep up with the young studs that want to run to every tree. LOL

John, just curious how old are you? I hope I can still go after 63 years of hunting. I'm sure youve got some stories to tell.

I think it is a bigger priority than the way I treat it. My job demands a lot of time so I sometimes feel guilty about spending more time away from the family. But boy is it refreshing to get out and enjoy a hunt. Sometimes the wife says get out and hunt so I won't be sop grumpy.

I'll be 69 in a couple of month's, & if it wasn't for the Arthritis in my lower back, I would feel great. But every day above ground, is a good day, & I'm not going to complain.
