breakin off possums

what's a good way too break young(1-1/2 old)dog off catchin and treein possums short of beatin him to death?tree's coons pretty descent,don't really want too get rid of him i think he's gonna be a good coon dog just want him to leave them danged things alone,also doesn't mess with any other off game junk

Ammonia. Tie him back shoot the possum out pour it all over him let your dog have at it. Bet he won't touch a single one after that

My feeling is anytime you shoot offgame out to your dog, it don't matter WHAT you do after that, you just taught your dog to tree offgame.

My method of possum braking is to screw them into the ground with a TriTronics under every possum they tree. I don't do nothin to the possum.

So boone. Do you do the same thing with a deer??

the thing i have always done whether they tree one or not is break them before they ever find them in the wild. ill catch one and tie it up(i dont leave them in the cage trap because some dogs will assoiate the trap with the correction) in a field ill take a dog/pup out and let him run around and come across the possum. when he get anywhere close to it i will use the tritronics on him.. for one that are a little tougher ill walk them up to it every time i get with in 10 feet of it i will lay it on. when they pull away from the area i will turn the correction off. i will repeat this till when they see us walking up on it they are trying everythign they can to go the other direction. do this a coup[le days and you should have much more problem..

I had a year and a half old last year that absolutly loved possums.. so i was told to soak it in the ammonia. Im like that too.. i dont think that u should shoot anything out of a tree that u dont want ur dog on.. So i just cut the stinkin tree down.. Most the time possum up a little tree. Id cut it down just high enough where he couldnt get it.. Then i would soak it in ammonia.. Hed get al fired up of course cause he could then see it.. Hed get it out of a tree and get a good mouth full and would roll roll and roll. then go back for more.. When he started taking aholdd of it again ftill i didnt think it was phasing him any more, id soak it again.. Keep doing it till my gallon was gone.. figured after that night would stop it.. Well it didnt.. He treed about 5 more after that, i used a gallon each time.. He was one tough hound.. But after i done that i put him in coons and hed slam one. i guess he got the point finally... Sold him at twenty months old for 5,000 and had the highest scoring cast at the superstakes. So it worked for him.

LEARN HOW TO COOK!

Once a guy acquires a taste for a well prepared possum,all of this nonsense of breaking dogs off of them will fall by the wayside.......your dogs wont be able to tree enough them......

Remember this,the guy with the most possums in his sack at the end of the night.....ALWAYS WINS

Ok I've seen enough!!!!! One anything that can hurt the dogs scents of smell is very bad and yall need to quit coonhunting... Two the easiest ways to break a dog on oppossem....


One way is to show the dog no attention and go home if they tree a oppossem.Don't just keep running them all night!!! They will find out in time that if they tree a coon they keep running..

Two is for the hard headed dogs and I had one..(Note: had one)
Find a road kill oppossem and skin it out,and then nail the skin to the top of there dog house.This works real good in the summer.When the skin starts to stick just leave it in there for about 2 to 3 weeks.Don't take your dog hunting in this time.Your dog will get so sick of the smell of OPPOSSEM they will run the other way if they smell another while hunting...

I would start with the first one before having to try the second...There is no betting , whopping , shocking and for god sakes no chemicals!!!!!!!

Ps... Make sure and I mean sure before you make any punishment to your dog.If your not sure of something don't punish your dog.If there is an oppossem in the tree keep lookin.To many times I've seen the coon in the top of the tree the oppossem's in.... (But thats my two cents worth)

..never , ever , ever ...ever ... shoot or show your dog something you don't want them to run ... they cannot understand why we want something .... and at the same time don't .


... un-train the same as you train , it starts with letting caged possum loose of dumping out in creeks where you see a possum ... scold the dog for even starting the track and break them before they ever get near a tree.

... never let a dog see a cage or hit the breaks and dump a dog on road game ... coon or possum .

.... if your dog trees a possum or brings you one , tear into him good and then go home and let the lesson sink in ...

.. how memory and learning works for dogs and people has been figured out ... it involves learning a lesson that is in your short term memory , and then stopping and letting your brain rest ...and it takes hours for it to be transferred into permamanent memory ..

.. if you jam more stuff in there before that happens , you don't learn as fast ....

NOT TRYING TO GET ON ANYONES TOES, I HAVE BEEN HUNTEN 40 + YEARS, I HAVE USED AMMONIA ON MAYBE 100 TIMES, IT WILL NOT AFFECT, A DOGS NOES IN NO WAY. I ALSO USE IT FOR A HOUND TREEING IN THE GROUND. The pups I have worked with would laugh their ass off if I scolded them for treeing possum and then they'd go tree another.
On the other hand, my Aunt swears a good scolding will keep her poodle from peeing on the carpet but her carpet sure has alot of pee spots.

I am not talking about beating but a spanking never hurt anyone or any dog. Some dogs may learn by scolding but most will need a little more than that. Just my thoughts!!!!!!

Start small and keep building til' the dog breaks or dies .... if it's the latter , just call it assisted suicide .


There are some dogs that love doing something so much , only the constant fear of death will keep them from doing it ... the word you use for those is usually " bluetick".

I attmept to break them off possums and not off treeing game. What ever I do it's normally not around a tree.

My walker treed em like crazy when he was young. Tried shocking and that didn't work. Shot one out to him and kept him tied back and whooped his butt with the dead thing. He tried to pull the tree down running the other way. He was two then and is now 7. In those 5 years i looked and one grinner and that was after i laid him up all last summer. When that grinner hit the ground he ran away from that tree about 500 yds and got under a coon. Worked for him.

i dont like shockin dogs on tree, but when i had a dog that would tree a possum, id knock it out and beat him half to death with it. but other than beatin em half to death, idk
