Independant???

Do people not want independant dogs? i went to walker days and all three nights i drew automatic strike dogs that would me too all night long. two of them won the cast and one cast even got mad that my dog was getting split and "burnin up hunt time" i don't know about anyone else but i want mine by himself unless something backs him. sorry just had to vent
Also one of them that won the cast was being bragged up for being sold for $3400. sure hope that guy knows what he bought

independent is nice..... if the dog is quick and independent. i like mine to get to himself but dont mind if he backs . problem with some extremely independent dogs is they are slower than pond water on a windy day and its hard to win with one that is last strike and always alone when your hunting with a dog that gets struck and treed fast and has a coon and gets a piece of yours.

friday night i hunted with an extremely nice bluetick. we had 12 split trees and seen coon in all of them. mine covered on one of his coon and the blue dog drew a little minus. we each treed 6 coon. had a hell of a nice hunt and had no arguing

my dogs a alone do it urself dog and people dont like it had a guy this weekend kept strikin off my dog and i let it go once i got first tree then i talked to the judge to look out for it told him to listen for bark diffrence so seconde drop i took no mercy and wam called first strike on first bark as were listenin hes like ahhh ahh i think thats my dog i lost it and said ok lesson 1 listen chop chop chop my dog then herad his for a sec the chop chop chop chop ok you hear now then the judge steped in

There is a difference between independant and jealous. Besides I see many of these independant dogs that were made that way. I want a dog to use its brain to run and tree the coon it strikes no matter what the other dogs are doing.

I definitely see more pack style dogs at the hunts than independent dogs..

the female i run is more independent than most anything ive hunted with...

i think much of it comes back to the training...if you hunt dogs with other dogs thats what they learned...if you hunt them alone, they learned to go do it alone...

we hunted the female i run 95% of the time alone...once in a blue moon we take her with a 2nd dog..

if you have an accurate independent dog that is fairly quick, it is HARD to beat...those first trees add up quick...and you will rarely see the other 3 pack style dogs getting first and first all night long...and if your independent dog can take first strike a couple times and sits under the coon, your usually going to take the win...

its also super easy to call independent dogs as they are usually off on their own...your not trying to pick your dog out on a tree when theres 3 dogs burning a track and hammering a tree together...


problems though, you run into bad luck and get a den tree or 2 in a hunt and the pack dogs dont hit any dens, you fall behind quick...

and, if you got liars and cheaters and guys that wont score trees for what they should be scored, you will get out voted alot...ive had that trouble on many hunts this spring...2 or 3 dogs on a slick tree and it gets circled just because they wont take their minus...and theres really nothing to do about it...i call them out but it doesnt help...taking it to the MOH wont help as he cant score a tree and has to take their vote and judges into account and thats all he can go off of...so its been frustrating...

but i like my females independent-ness...makes calling her easy...and when we have some luck and stay away from dens, and she doesnt get into any trouble with minus on slicks or leaving trees, shes hard to beat....she also doesnt go deep unless she has to...many times, she trees closer than the pack dogs...trees on coon that the pack dogs blew past...that happens alot...not saying she WONT get deep..but shes a shorter range dog..probably due to her growing up in thick coon...most our drops on a pleasure hunting night our dogs dont have to go far at all to find a coon..usually struck within a minute..

I guess i pack a CULL he hunts hard dont mess with cold tracks never with another dog extremely fast and accurate treed 5 times had 5 coons on a 2 hr cast saturday night

i have a young blue dog that at 10 months old is by hisself about 80 percent of the time and doesn't take all night doing it. i've been amazed that even outside of breeding season how often coon runn together cause he has made it a habit of being treed close to the other dogs and both have has coon

Most of the people that HATE independent dogs are the ones with the party animals that always seem to be treed with the crowd. Once you have owned a truly independent dog its hard to settle for less.

I've owned both independent dogs and jealous dogs. I love an independent dog but I'd take a jealous dog over a party animal that's always treed with the crowd any day.

An independent dog will cover but only if it doesn't have anything going, a jealous dog will not cover and will go around a treed dog looking for another coon to tree. Some of mine are independent some are jealous, NONE are party animals. And they aren't that way because they are slow.

All I ask is that a dog make its own mistakes, don't make a habit of letting the other dogs make mistakes for you. You'll be surprised at how many hunts you win just by having the dog that makes the fewest mistakes!

And no matter what you think, you can't make a dog independent, they are born that way. Keep whipping em off those trees when they cover and sooner or later you'll find them off in the weeds taking pictures while you shine your buddy's trees.

The ideas that people have of an independent dog and a jealous dog are not the same. They are in some points. I like my dog to finish its own track and if it is not doing anything go honor another dog if it is right. A dog that will never tree with another dog is what I consider indpendent. A jealous dog says this is my tree and nobody can stay here but me, even though I was the last one here.

ok what is my dog he gets hunted by himeslef alot but i hunt alot of hunts he treed the first 3 coon seen at a hunt and then treed after two dogs were treed with them and they did have the coon the last drop he treed approximately 5 trees down from the other two dogs and had the coon they were slick this last hunt he opened way away from the other dogs and treed the other two dogs came into him and treed they had the coon next drop he treed and the other two dogs come iinto him again it was a den the next drop he went in started trailing back twards the other two dogs went silent and they were declared treed after the 5 was up he started treeing on there tree a big den so what would he be considered? oh and ive seen him leave trees if someone beats him to the tree and hell find his own and 90% of the time he has a coon

i would say your dog is independent but will back.....a dog can be independant and back other dogs but a loner will not back another dog

Sounds to me like you got a good coondog. Knows when the coon is there and when it isn't. I don't call that independent. I would say you have an honest, honoring coondog. Sounds like a good one.

snuff-52 i drew millcreek molly in two hunts both times she blew in deep and had the meat, so if that is what you are calling a cull sent them my way, she only won around 110,000 thousand dollars not bad for a cull?

independent hounds!!

I like a hound that can hunt with or with out company for the soul fact I like to hunt all my dogs to gether or with friends and I also like to take each dog out by themselves. Most totally independent hounds are great for competition because most guys are looking to rackup points to win thats great and all , but to me win in the hunts I would rather do it in style with something that loves hunting even better when other dogs are right there backing him up because people seem to remimber that dog and the next thing you know everyone is wanting to hunt with you.

I like to win with a dog that is always alone always have the meat never backs dont say much doin it but is fast enuff to get good strikes these are the ones people remember and hope they DONT hunt with him again
