Deep & Lonely

Deep and lonely.....that has got to be the premier description for the power dogs of today. Everybody wants them deep and lonely.
Lil Red is one of the hottest dogs going today and she can certainly get deep and she don't mind being alone but from what I have observed from her, deep and lonely is a long way from her basic style. This is a dog that hunts where you put her, alone or with 3 others. Send her into a 10 acre patch and she will try to tree every coon in that patch before she even thinks about moveing out. She is as quick on both ends as anything I have seen but if you tree a coon on her, and that CAN be done, she will get the next peice of that tree in a heartbeat. And she absolutely NEVER gives anything back. You don't walk a mile to her and you don't go home taking about all the coons she treed off the clock. Deep and lonely sounds cool but under every coon in the patch is what wins in UKC. JMO.

Jim,

I have read a lot of post this morning about this dog. I have seen the score, that was said to have been scored this weekend at Walker Days. They hunted 3 or 4 dogs that packed and never treed seperate or there was a coon in every tree with all dogs treed together.

It takes first and first on nine coons and a little over thirteen minutes per coon.

Brother I promise you I can't move that fast!!!!!

Ive never understood the concept of such an independant dog, its dogs that hunt like lil red that win the big ones year in year out, especially here in the mid west, our style dogs can tree several coons in a 10 acre patch, some guys have to leave after they tree one coon in the same patch IF their dogs stay in the patch, they sure waste a lot of time driving, seems like we can tree the same amount of coons in a few hrs that it takes them all night to tree

i'll take two just like you described.

COONDOGS, not just racehorses.

i got to hunt Angola last year and each drop was averaging 6 minutes..cut em ,,tree,em and plus,em and call time out and move..I thought that 2 hour hunt was never going to end..I was always a doubter of these big scores until this nite ..now I believe them.

kycooner, you make a very valid point. I just have a feeling the majority of those who are screaming "no way!!!" have never been there, have never done it and have no clue.

Jim,

When I first saw the title of your post I thought it was going to be a personal ad. Naw, just kidding with ya!

I hunted with a line of pretty famous dogs back in the late 80's and early 90's that hunted that way. They were coon hounds, but here in Michigan i just didn't see the need. The thing is I bet lil Red will go as far as any dog to find a coon if there aren't any close. A smart coon dog that uses its head will go further than a dog that only has talent.

I couldnt see that score in a four dog cast but in a two Id say it could be done pretty easy if the coon are movin and the dog is clicken.

Ive always hated a dog that went 2 miles to tree a coon. I want them to run the first track they come upon and finish it with the other dogs or without.

IMO there is very little that seperates the great dogs from the good dogs.....A great dog might only get sucked into a few slicks, vs covering on everything Or they just get by themselves when the other dogs are wasting hunt time unproductivly.

I dont need a dog to be alone all the time but,
If a dog can get under 1 more coon than the rest of the cast or avoid 1 mistake the others make, it can win a vast majority of its casts IMO.

Well , when you read the the final cast stuff in the mags from the bigger hunts .... it sounds like a normal hunt to me , not too much " deep and lonely" ... not many " pull proof" dogs that " never come back" .

I think there is a big gap in what we read about in the mags and on the internet and what is going on in the woods ...

lol, you got that right.

Justin, you make a great point. All you have to do is follow the play-by-play for the major events to see that.

And that type of hunting demonstrates a "coon dog" ability???? People honestly enjoy hunting like that?......must be some super dog work to over come such tough conditions!?

Take it for what it's worth............

A friend and I hunted 2 dogs , that are NOT coondogs in my opinion , in a 20 acre patch one night in the snow.
We never kill any coon out of this woods.
In an hours time , we made 8 trees with 5 of them being on the outside and 3 dens.
I'm not a comp hunter , but even I know it don't take long to run up a high score in a short time IF you have both coon and a coondog !
These guys that think you have to kill alot of coon to make a dog , and that they have to " get deep and alone " to be a coondog , are simply fooling themselves.
Folks need to realize that by leaving alot of coon , you make it easier on the dog as he is less likely to make a mistake.
Which dog is gonna be better........
A dog that has to spend an hour looking for a coon , or a dog that can get the experience by running and treeing 5 coon in that same hour?
It's easier to trash-break a dog with alot of coon.
It's easier to teach a dog NOT to go back to a tree.
It's easier to get a dog to tree.
Etc,etc,etc.

Jim is exactly right...
A dog that can get under EVERY coon in a small patch is gonna run up a good score in a hurry. All while " deep and lonely " is trying to get under one !

deep and lonley

Several on here are trying to compare the scores between pkc and ukc hunts.Ukc hunters are charging forward trying to get a big score to win the hunt.Pkc hunters are laying back hoping they don't make a bad call and loose the cast, because they can win with nothing.I know that pkc hunters have good dogs also, but on a cast they act like they're scared to death to call their dog. It's just a different format and you have to play the game you're in. A different game and a different kind of dog.Ukc is offensive hunting and pkc is defensive hunting.

I used to have a bluetick that hunted that same way. Maybe not as quick to find coons as lil red but she was very nice. Never ran but a handfull of coons over 300 yards. Had almost everyone looking when you got to the tree. If nothing was moving she would go find lay-ups. She was a pleasure to hunt thats forsure I really think about that dog alot. Especialy since I started hunting these charged up walkers I'm running now. Jim why don't ya'll take her and make all that pkc money as well?

Yall say what you want but wait till everybody on your cast DONT withdraw and a couple are the deep and lonely kind..You want be running up the score then!!! Probably want win cause of it but you'll not run up a score card..The ol deep and lonely will be right there with you..Anyhow a 10ac patch here dont even hold a coon much less 10!

GA Dawg,
No worries....dogs like this here dont stand a chance hunting against dogs like Zeb 3, Rat, Mojo, Ol Chubby, Boomhower, Bone Collector, Clayton etc. Hunt 10 nights against these dogs you will lose more than you win.

Yup , I'd be real proud to have "deep and lonely" hold a coondog back to keep his score down too ! LOL

If close & quick is treeing 2 coon to your one , ol deep and lonely ain't gonna keep up long ! LOL?

If you play by the rules deep and lonely will ruin the hunt. You can't keep turning a dog loose when one is declared tree'd. Dogs are leash locked walking that mile with the cast to a tree. I don't know about up north but thats the hunt where I come from. By the way I hate a deep and lonely selfish typ dog.

Might want to brush up on the rules a bit.....

I don’t want my dog to pass coon up, but at the same time I don’t want it hunting the same section if nothing is moving. A good hound should work a track when it comes to it. If there is nothing close I want a dog to go find the closest one, could be another 500 yards could be a mile.
